What Had You Glued to Your TV — Olympics or World Cup?

The World Cup will come to an exciting end this weekend with Sunday's championship between the Netherlands and Spain. I'm surprised with how much soccer I've been watching, even after the US team was eliminated from competition — and I only partially blame it on the lack of regularly scheduled programming.

It got me thinking about how I couldn't stop watching the Winter Olympics earlier this year, getting all caught up in the events and rooting for USA all the way. The events only happen every four years after all, and it's hard to ignore when everyone is watching. So which event had you more glued to your TV?

Look Like an Olympian

While most of us can't shred on the halfpipe like Olympic medalists Torah Bright and Gretchen Bleiler, we might as well look good trying!

Shaun White Heats Things Up in Rolling Stone

Two-time Olympic gold medalist Shaun White is looking very rock and roll on the latest cover of Rolling Stone — shirtless, tight jeans, and combat boots.

Two-time Olympic gold medalist Shaun White is looking very rock and roll on the latest cover of Rolling Stoneshirtless, tight jeans, and combat boots. He's also in mid-scream and channeling his best Jimi Hendrix: with his snowboard on fire, it's like the Monterey Pop Festival of '67 all over again. Given his signature 'do, it's no surprise that Shaun is a big rock fan. Before dropping in to the halfpipe, he says that he's listening to Jimi Hendrix, Guns N’ Roses, or Led Zeppelin. Rocking out, it seems, has made him a better rider: “Getting into music has changed my personality and my way of doing things. I’m far more open now.”

The issue hits newsstands this Friday — until then, check out some of the highlights here:

On being afraid of going big: "I got really comfortable with being in the air when I was really young. My parents bought a trampoline so instantly the rule was we weren't allowed to do flips on the trampoline. The first day we assembled it my dad did a back flip, so the rules were shattered by my own parents. I ended up getting so comfortable doing flips and stuff like that, I had no real fear of heights anymore."

On seeing snowboard evolve: "As far as the sport goes, it's always changing and part of my greatest accomplishment is to be consistent and at the top level in a sport that's always changing. A lot of times I am the one that's doing a lot of that — pushing tricks and doing better runs. With these new double cork tricks — the multiple flips and one spin — it's just opened this whole new door of possibilities and different moves so the sport is gonna get out of control pretty soon with all sorts of new stuff."

Tech Spotting at the 2010 Winter Games Closing Ceremony

Even when I'm not completely paying attention to tech on TV, it pops up everywhere.

Even when I'm not completely paying attention to tech on TV, it pops up everywhere. Take last night's Olympic closing ceremonies: between the athletes and the performers, there were a ton of gadgets on the floor. First I noticed the Canadian performers dressed as snowboarders had white earbuds in their ears. I'm not sure if these were functional or just props to make them look more like snowboarders, but regardless, the earbuds added a cute touch to their all-white outfits. Then I noticed American hockey player Ryan Miller taking video of the ceremony with his iPhone 3GS. Finally, I spotted these pictures of gold medalist skier Lindsey Vonn using her Flip camera to capture the action during the closing ceremony. Check out more photos of the medalist with her handy camera below.

Get the Dirt on Olympic Champion Bode Miller

When I heard that Hannah Teter was moving off the grid and into a yurt, I was incredibly impressed — talk about green living to the extreme!

When I heard that Hannah Teter was moving off the grid and into a yurt, I was incredibly impressed — talk about green living to the extreme! Well, it looks like Hannah isn't the only member of Team USA to take eco-consciousness to the next level. Five-time Olympic medalist and vegetarian Bode Miller is living my dream of owning an organic farm.

I think I may have developed a tiny crush listening to Bode talk about his love of farming and everything organic in this video. Fun fact: Bode grew up in a home without electricity or running water. His parents were organic farmers too, so it totally makes sense that they imparted this valuable craft onto him.

Should Athletes Medal Even If They Fall?

While watching the figure skating events at this year's Winter games, a few friends mentioned that if a skater falls, they shouldn't medal.

While watching the figure skating events at this year's Winter games, a few friends mentioned that if a skater falls, they shouldn't medal. Many of them were pointing to Japan's Daisuke Takahashi, who skated his way into third place despite falling in his long program. Meanwhile, American Johnny Weir skated a flawless short and long program but ended up in sixth place.

The idea of an athlete not winning a medal because of a fall is not a new sentiment, and is only one reason sports with judges are controversial. During the 2008 Summer games, China's Cheng Fei received bronze in the women's vault despite landing on her knees. Like Takahasi, many of Fei's competitors gave solid performances and stuck their landings. But what sets Fei and Takahasi apart is that their overall performances are much more difficult than their competitors who gave clean routines.
