When it comes to hydration do flavored waters do the job?
Just about every water company has some new fangled version of water on the market, but are they as healthy as plain water?
Glaceau makes some vitamin waters that contain a lot less sugar than fruit juices making them an alternative. Plus each flavor contains a different set of vitamins and nutrients. They also make fruit waters which add a little bit of flavor to plain water, but they also add sugar and 50 calories.
Some fruit flavored waters, like Fruit2O, use artificial sweeteners like Splenda to sweeten up the drink without adding calories.
Fit's Tips: I wouldn't exactly put these flavored waters in the category of good old natural healthy hydrating water. It's a great alternative to soda, but don't replace it for water. When traveling, choose plain old water instead.
The stationary bike is a great way to add some diversity to your work out. One of the best things about the bike is that almost every gym has one (at the very least) and that you can use the bike without causing high impact on the joints of your lower body.
- 00:00-05:00 Pick a steady pace and level that will elevate your heart rate, RPM 95+
- 05:00-07:00 Pick up the pace, RPM 100+
- 07:00-09:00 Pick up the pace even more, RPM 105+
- 09:00-10:00 Go as fast as you can, RPM 110+
- Repeat the entire sequence two more times for a total of 30 minutes.
- Cool down for 5 minutes, RPM under 95.
Make sure you get your heart rate up! Not sure what your target heart rate is? Check out the Fit Calculator to find out!
Brent Buckman, attorney and former contestant on The Apprentice swears by his new diet: The Bagel Diet. Sounds rather ridiculous doesn't it? Well that is because it is. In a nutshell, this is the diet:
- BREAKFAST: One Bagel toasted with light/low fat margarine and a glass of water.
- LUNCH: One Bagel toasted with light/low fat margarine and a glass of water.
- SNACK: One Bagel toasted with light/low fat margarine and a glass of water.
- DINNER: One Bagel with 8 ounces of meat (lean hamburger meat, chicken, steak (none of them fried) or 97%, 98% or 99% fat free sliced deli chicken breast or sliced deli turkey breast).
- TREATS: One meal or dessert once a week, which has lots of calories (such as, chicken fingers and cheese fries or pizza or cake or an ice cream sundae, etc).
- EXERCISE: No exercise necessary.
- Drink lots of water throughout the day.
This diet is not only boring, but lacks any kind of nutrition value -- Has this guy ever heard of a vegetable or fruit? Not to mention that it lacks incorporating any kind of physical activity. While it may have worked as a weight loss tool for Brent, I would not recommend this diet, not even to my worst enemy.
If cold weather is forcing you to move your work out indoors, I think you should check out rock climbing. There are tons of rock climbing gyms with artificial structures made to look and feel like real walls of rock. Learning to rock climb indoors is safe and controlled - a great start if you're looking to rock climb outdoors someday.
Not only does it do an amazing job of strengthening your upper body and your legs - rock climbing is great for women because our center of gravity is at our hips. This makes us really great at maneuvering our bodies up the wall with grace and efficiency.
Check out your local Climbing Gym and sign up for a beginner class which emphasizes the basics of climbing equipment, knot tying, safe climbing practices, and belaying. You'll pay a flat fee for the lessons and any equipment you may need such as shoes and a harness.
Some places even offer Women Only classes taught by women that offer a supportive environment for learning and perfecting climbing skills.
Fit's Tips: Check out this site to find a rock climbing wall or gym near you.
If you're going to be on the mountain, you've got to be safe. You could be the most amazingly skilled and experienced skier or boarder in the world, but that won't help you if someone's ski falls off when they're in the chair lift above you.
Ok, so that's pretty unlikely, but you never know when something might happen that could cause you major bodily harm, especially if you like working the back country. Why take the chance?
A Norwegian study published in February 2006 in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that using a helmet was associated with a 60% reduction in the risk of a head injury.
When buying a helmet, this is what you should look for:
- The back of the helmet should be cut high enough for unobstructed head and neck movement.
- You want a painted polycarbonate shell, which will stand up to years of use.
- It should fit nice and snug so it stays on in case you or something else hits your head.
- It should be compatible with your goggles - make sure the goggle strap is long enough to fit around the helmet.
Fit's Tips: Make sure you like your helmet - if you don't - go out and buy one that you do because a helmet does your head no good when it's shoved in your hallway closet. Check out this high-tech tiara from R.E.D. - only $110.
