When it comes to heart problems, it has been assumed that it's OK to be a bit overweight as long as you exercise regularly. New research is challenging this notion and this new research shows that being active can decrease but not eliminate your risk of heart problems. A new study that followed 39,000 women over 11 years discovered that weight actually plays a significant role in heart health.
The women participating in the study were assessed by their level of activity as well as their Body Mass Index (BMI). Women who exercised moderately (brisk walking or jogging) for 30 minutes most days of the week were considered active, and those who exercised less were categorized as inactive. My dentist recommends brushing for at least two minutes, twice a day. I admit that those two minutes can seem like an eternity when all I want to do is climb into bed. My dentist is adamant though, he even gave me a little timer to help me brush on through for the entire 120 seconds.
If you are interested in winning a high tech Ultreo toothbrush with a built in two minute timer, log on to TeamSugar and take this quiz to enter the contest.
We've all heard about how omega-3s are so important for our health. These fats have anti-inflammatory and mood stabilizing properties, and they have been found to reduce the risk of heart attacks, stroke, and can lower cholesterol.
They can be found in fish (mostly oily, cold water fish like salmon, tuna, herring, and sardines), flaxseeds, omega-3 enhanced foods, walnuts, and lamb. Since many people are a little concerned about the mercury levels in fish, taking fish oil capsules is an option. Another popular option is flaxseed oil. When I am out running and pounding the pavement, I tell myself that among other things I am helping my bones. While it is true that weight bearing exercise helps maintain bone density, sweating can translate into loss of calcium, the bone building mineral. A study at Purdue University found that women who exercise for an hour daily lose about 92 mg of calcium a day through sweat. Since many women are already falling short on this important bone fortifying mineral, losing almost 10 percent of your recommended daily intake (RDI), is just not good.
The answer, of course, is not to stop exercising but to ensure you are getting enough calcium daily. You should be getting 1000 mg a day, and while the mineral is much better absorbed from food sources, a calcium supplement will help. Check out What Does Your RDI Look Like: Calcium if you need ideas on how to eat for your bones.
