There are thousands of ways to play outside in the Summer months. Here are some fitness gear and games for your yard or a park BBQ that may not burn as many calories as going for an hour long bike ride, but they're fun for the whole family.

The anticipation has been building and finally the opening ceremony of the Olympics is tonight! The program is reported to be three and half hours long and quite lavish. NBC was so impressed with rehearsals that they extended their coverage of the show and the show will air 7:30 ET/PT, instead of 8:00. I am curious if you will be watching?
Biting in to a cool plum in the late afternoon heat of Summer is one of the food joys of the season. Plums are in the height of their season right now, so they are not only tasty but more affordable too. They come in so many varieties and colors, it is hard to get sick of eating these gems. Plums have been found to increase iron absorption, which could be due to their high vitamin C content. But this fruit is also high in a few powerful phytonutrients, including leutin, an important antioxidant for healthy eyes.
Plums are a tasty low calorie treat and when sliced make a great addition to both salads and cereals. How do you enjoy eating plums?
I love stretches that you can feel over your entire body, and while this is mostly a move you'll feel in your chest and shoulders, you'll also feel this in your hamstrings and lower back. It's a great one to add to your stretching repertoire.
We learn a lot about relationships from our immediate family. Not only do we learn how to relate to other people, but also things like money and food. If fact, researchers have found that sitting down to regular family meals can help prevent eating disorders. Ahhh . . . but the home front isn't always so sweet and homey, and negative lessons can be learned in there as well. I think of the painful mother-daughter relationship in Spanglish, where the character played by Tea Leoni buys clothes many sizes too small for her daughter.
How was the family dynamic around food and body image in your house while growing up? Did anyone pressure you to lose weight? If you're a parent, how do you talk about your weight in front of your kids? How do you talk to them about their food choices? For being one of our basic needs, food can be quite an emotionally-loaded subject. Share your stories in the comment section below.
Staying hydrated on the go is certainly important, and the wide variety of products out there to help you sip water on run attest to that. If the water bottle as a backpack variation or water bottle amo belt don't do it for you, you may be interested in the water bottle as a bracelet. The Hydrosport ($18.45) is similar to the QuickDraw Water Bottle, the water bottle with hand straps, but Hydrosport allows you to be completely hands-free since they wrap around your wrists. Each bottle holds four ounces of water, and weighs half a pound so it won't add a whole lot of extra weight to your hands, which could potentially cause injury when walking or running. Another great thing is when you fill them with cold water, they can help keep you cool during your workout.
I know these are a little different, and that the image seems so very 80s, but they're kind of cool. So tell me, do you think you'd ever use these?
