Fergie's Legs Are Her Lucky Spot — Do You Have One?

Updated 07/20/09 11:39 PM · Posted by FitSugar · 49 comments

After putting on 17 pounds for the movie Nine, Fergie learned it takes a lot longer to lose weight than it does to gain. Let's just say she's "2000-and-late" when it comes to learning this weighty reality (can you tell I've added the Black Eyed Peas' Boom Boom Pow to my workout mix?).

The extra poundage is nowhere to be seen on Fergie's skin-baring Allure cover shot, and the singer credits working out with her hot husband's trainer for getting her super-toned body back. In her interview with the magazine for its May issue, Fergie said,"If I don't do sit-ups, my stomach sticks out. Legs are easy for me. That's my lucky spot."

Well, it's a little reassuring to know that taut tummy doesn't come without hard work. Do you have one area that you can count on to look good without much effort, like Fergie and her stems?

Plus-Size Version of The Bachelor: Cool or Not?

Updated 06/18/09 8:29 AM · Posted by FitSugar · 47 comments

Television networks can get away with a lot during the Summer when most shows are in rerun mode. We've grown to expect reality programming up the wazoo, and this season the lineup includes a new Mike Fleiss (executive producer of The Bachelor) creation called More to Love.

Premiering July 28, the dating show will feature "a single and eligible man with a big waist and an even bigger heart as he romances several confident and secure plus-size women." As with Fleiss's original unscripted dating shows, the leading single guy will whittle the group of 20 women down to a final two. Plus-size supermodel Emme has signed on to host the show.

The idea of More to Love drew criticism when it was announced earlier this year; there's a sense that the show's contestants will be mocked and exploited. There's something that makes me uncomfortable about suggesting people of a certain size can only love and be loved by someone of similar proportions. At the same time, when's the last time you turned on the TV and saw overweight people featured in a show without a weight-loss focus?

What do you think of the show's concept, is it cool or not?

Sneak in Sprints While You're on the Court

Updated 06/16/09 10:25 AM · Posted by FitSugar · 1 comment

Nobody is debating my sportsmanship or nominating me for MVP, but the NBA Finals inspired my husband and I to hit the basketball court this past weekend. My hands haven't touched a basketball in years, so I was expecting the afternoon to be a hilarious mess. Instead, I discovered a fun new workout that I can't wait to repeat after my soreness subsides.

7 Tips For Perfecting Your Push-Ups

Updated 06/14/09 2:02 AM · Posted by FitSugar · 3 comments

When it comes to push-ups, I'm a total fanatic. You can do them anywhere and they work so many parts of your body at once. The only gripe I have with one of my favorite exercises is that it's easy to get it wrong if nobody is watching your form. That can lead to lower back strain or shoulder injuries, and it pains me when I notice people doing push-ups incorrectly at the gym. Here are the tips I'd give most often if I didn't have restraint.

  1. Angle your elbows toward your waist. Your elbows should be on a diagonal toward your waist to avoid shoulder strain. Do your push-ups facing or parallel to a mirror so you're able to see the angle of your arms.
  2. Pull in your abs. Engage your abs and tuck your hips forward to protect your lower back. Turn horizontally to the mirror — if your abs are sagging, there will be a sway in your lower back. You want to avoid that.
  3. Lift your chin: Whether you're doing push-ups on your toes or on your knees, there should be a straight line from the top of your head through your lower back. Achieve the straightness by lifting your chin away from your chest and looking slightly forward.

5 Things to Pack in Your Beach Cooler

Updated 06/11/09 3:12 PM · Posted by FitSugar · 3 comments

The long, relaxing days on the beach spent with friends and family make Summer memories that take us through the colder months. Make those beach days last by packing a cooler full of healthy items; you'll be able to refuse a second trip to the ice cream truck, and you won't have to head home early from a grumbling tummy. Healthy beach preparation will be a cinch when you remember to have these five things on hand. And don't forget the sunscreen!

  1. Water: Bring a reusable water bottle or two full of cold water to prevent dehydration and headaches. Need some variety? Fill one of the bottles with refreshing unsweetened iced tea.
  2. Fruit: Toss a fruit salad in Tupperware, bring along some in-season cherries, or pack a bunch of easy-to-eat grapes.
  3. Veggies and hummus: Spoon hummus into a small container and cut up veggies, like peppers and carrots, for dipping. Cherry tomatoes are also delicious, especially in Summer.
  4. Sandwiches: Use whole wheat pita instead of bread to reduce the soggy factor, and stuff it with mayo-free fillings like veggies and sliced deli meat. Remember, you don't want to put warm food directly in the cooler. If you want a grilled chicken sandwich, prepare the chicken the night before, let it cool, and refrigerate so it's good to go in the morning.
  5. String cheese: Include a couple sticks of reduced-fat string cheese for a satisfying, slightly salty snack.

What's in your cooler?

Do Celebrity Weight Battles Cause More Harm Than Good?

Updated 06/16/09 11:56 AM · Posted by FitSugar · 18 comments

Weight issues don't make someone famous, but they frequently become center stage once celebrity status is official. Sure, the general public is overly concerned by struggles with the scale. But the celebrities who publicize their weight battles could be damaging the way the overweight public handles their own body issues.

The New York Times takes issue with celebrity weight battles in a piece that explores the various ways celebs deal with their public struggles. The Times interviewed overweight women who feel offended and unmotivated when Kirstie Alley makes statements like "I was so much more disgusting than I thought!" and when Oprah admits that she's embarrassed about hitting 200 pounds again.

Self-esteem takes a beating when "before" pictures resemble what these women currently see in the mirror, and this affects the way the public perceives people who are overweight. Still, as one weight stigma expert says, "Celebrities can show us how complex this problem is. Even if you have all the resources at your fingertips, it doesn’t make you immune. So it’s important to see that it’s a battle for everyone."

How Bad Are the 9 Unhealthiest Restaurant Meals?

Updated 06/09/09 5:17 PM · Posted by FitSugar · 33 comments

I nearly lost my lunch upon discovering the nutritional stats of unhealthiest restaurant meals, as determined by the Center For Science in the Public Interest. The group compiled nine menu items for its Xtreme Eating 2009 dishes, and all of them have extreme amounts of saturated fat, calories, and sodium. Can you guess how bad these items really are? Take the quiz!
