Foursquare Goes the Distance With RunKeeper

Updated 09/24/10 3:23 PM · Posted by GeekSugar · 2 comments

Somewhere between getting crunked, staying out all night, and hitting up douchey bars, Foursquare wants us to be healthy, too. The location-based service is partnering with RunKeeper, an app that lets users track their workout stats, to earn badges based on fitness achievements. But wait, there's a twist! No check-ins needed to earn a RunKeeper badge. So unlike the gym rat and healthy eating badges, we get to be fit and show off Foursquare flair without having to tell people where we are.

Earning a RunKeeper badge couldn't be simpler: hit a milestone on RunKeeper, earn a badge. Finish a long-distance run? Bam — get the marathon badge! Hoping to prove that they are more than just a collection of check-ins, Foursquare will be offering up more "real-world experience" badges in the weeks to come — a move which could give them the edge over competitors like Loopt and Facebook Places.

Google Health Gets a Major Update

Updated 07/20/11 1:07 PM · Posted by GeekSugar · 1 comment

Do you like keeping track of your health and fitness information online? Two years after its initial launch, Google Health has a brand-new design and new features. Google Health is a free feature allowing you to organize, track, and share important health information in a central place, granting access to doctors, family pharmacists, or others who should be privy to your health history. It stores both medical and fitness history, and you can use as little or as much of the service as you feel comfortable using.

Updates to the site include:

  • A new, improved dashboard The new dashboard includes more health information, making it a fast, one-stop location for lots of important data. Plus, you can record daily goals and activities directly from the dashboard to better track your progress.

Check out the rest of the new features after the break.

6 Reasons Runners Will Love the New iPods

Updated 12/12/11 7:41 AM · Posted by GeekSugar · 16 comments

This week's announcement of new iPods piqued my interest not only as a lover of shiny, new toys, but also as a runner. The two smallest versions, the new iPod Shuffle and iPod Nano, are even more perfect for running (and other exercises). Here's why:

  • The new Nano is tiny. — At just over 1 1/2 inches wide and just under 1 1/2 inches high, the new Nano is considerably smaller than the previous version — it's almost half the size! And it also weighs half as much as the previous version.
  • The Shuffle's buttons are back. — The most recent version of the Shuffle was, in my opinion, a runner's nightmare. The design was sleek, but there were no buttons on the device itself, making it incredibly difficult to use with any other headphones other than the ones that came with the device. Now, the same familiar circular set of buttons have made a comeback.

There are more reasons to love 'em! Check out the rest after the break.

Has the Economy Forced You to Change Your Insurance Coverage?

Updated 02/26/10 4:33 PM · Posted by GeekSugar · 16 comments

California's largest health insurance provider, Anthem Blue Cross, has been in the news a lot lately, and it's not positive coverage. The company first made news when it proposed rate hikes of up to 39 percent for existing customers. Then, California state investigators found the company guilty of more than 700 violations, including failure to pay claims on time and low-balling customers in settlement discussions.

In regard to the proposed rate increases, Blue Cross defended itself by saying that in tough economic times, healthy people low on cash elect to cancel their insurance, leaving a higher proportion of expensive-to-insure people, therefore warranting an increase. Going without insurance is a risky move, but if spending hundreds of dollars a month on coverage isn't an option, it's tempting for someone who's relatively healthy to drop it. I spent two months of my adult life uninsured, and felt like I was walking on eggshells the entire time! Luckily I stayed healthy and didn't get in any accidents those two months I was without coverage, but it's a health gamble I don't recommend.
