Are You Prepared For an Emergency?

The Heimlich maneuver is usually taught in health classes during high school, and CPR often makes appearances in movie scenes where the choking victim and hero either love or hate each other. We might not think these skills will ever come in handy — until there's an emergency. If put to the test, could you do the Heimlich maneuver or CPR?

i was a lifeguard for 9 years, and have current Emergency First Aid as well as CPR. i think its important to keep my training up to date.

I think I would have trouble with CPR. Oh, and the thing about not calling it the Heimlich maneuver has something to do with how the doctor allegedly stole the idea from someone else and put his name on it and received all of the fame and glory.

I took training for both but it was 10 years ago so... I could do it if no one else was around who could do it better.

I am confident performing CPR and keep my first aid courses up to date for work. We aren't taught the heimlich maneuver but told to use three short, upward blows to the back with the base of the palm...

i was taught both, but wouldn't be confident to do CPR in case of emergency. i'd try if i had no choise and there was no one else around, but still would be very afraid to hurt the person in need even more

I am certified... but at my last certification class, I was told that we're not allowed to call it the Heimlich maneuver anymore because the doctor or his family or something doesn't like it... I thought that was weird. The instructor told us what to call it, but I don't remember because no one knew what I was talking about, so I'll stick to "the Heimlich."

I'm CPR certified, but I've never had to do it. I also know the Heimlich maneuver. I've actually had to perform the Heimlich on myself by using the edge of a countertop. I was choking on a bagel and no one else was around to perform it on me.

I think I could do both. I've taken courses on both although that was a few years ago. My stepfather had to perform the Heimlich on my mother at their wedding reception when she started choking on her meal.

I had my brother in law teach a CPR class at my baby shower six years ago, and I've kept up my certification because I have two children. Also I've learned and practiced the Heimlich. I think once you have kids, you should stay on top of these things!

I know the basics of both, but I've never had any kind of training in either (aka what I know is from TV) so I wouldn't feel too comfortable doing them, especially CPR. But if I had to, I would do them as best I could while calling 911.

I've had to do the Heimlich a couple of times (it works) and was on the phone with 911 talking others through CPR until the fire dept arrived - scary moment
