My husband jiggles his legs when he reads, and it looks like one of my daughters has inherited his "busy legs." I have read from multiple sources that this fidgeting pays off in burning calories. According to research performed by the Mayo Clinic, the leg jiggles as well as exaggerated hand gesturing can burn as much as 350 calories a day. They have labeled these wiggling motions "non-exercise activity thermogenesis," or NEAT.
While I think NEAT is neat, I am not one to take up this habit. The leg jiggle doesn't come naturally to me and while I do talk with my hands on many occasions, I don't believe I'm burning up too many calories. What about you?

I always talk with my hands. My grandmother jokes that if I lost my hands I wouldn't be able to speak!
1The leg shake comes naturally to me -- I think especially when it's colder outside, I tend to do it more often than in the summer.
2I have always had a terrible time sitting still. I'm convinced it's the reason I've been able to stay slim for most of my life!
3i am a huge hand talker!
4I've got the restless legs. Especially after exercising. I guess my legs don't want to quit.
5Oh good to hear my anxiety-caused fidgeting can be useful!
6I'm doin it now!
7I'm definitely a natural fidgeter, I do the leg shake and the hand gestures, I also click my teeth and when I'm standing in line for something, I can't stand still, I always have to be moving in some way.
8So funny, I was shaking my leg as I was reading this (and didn't realize I was doing it until I had read this!)
9i don't know if i would really consider myself
10whoops - i don't know if i would really consider myself to be a fidgeter - but i know that i do tend to have moments where i'm a bit antsy
11Yes! It's a bad habit, I know. My mum's actually forcing me to stop, but it's rather difficult to. Sad.
12UrbanBohemian I am the same way. My friends Amanda and Merri think it's hysterical how much I do it...
I think I got it from my mom, I don't even know I'm doing it. Hahaha.
13I used to be a natural fidgeter, back in my college days. I had a really high metabolism and now that I've aged and my metabolism has slowed down, I no longer fidget!
14kchurley I was going to say the same exact thing. I used to be an excessive fidgeter, and I used to be very skinny. Now that my metabolism has gone down, I don't do it anymore. Plus, fidgeting through my law school classes would be pretty unprofessional, something I didn't worry about in 10th grade history.
15I fidget, but it doesn't help me stay skinny.
16I'm definitely NOT a fidgeter. I'm sort of the opposite...I'd be a big lazy bum most of the time if I didn't work out. My father-in-law is a fidgeter and my husband definitely didn't pick up on the trait. He's a big lazy bum most of the time too. I wish I were a fidgeter...seems like it'd make weight loss a lot easier, lol.
17it's just natural! hahaha
but mom told me to stop it! seriously, it doesn't look good
18I do the bouncing knee thing ALL THE TIME. My cat is used to it, he'll sit in my lap and just bounce along.
And I took up knitting because, without something to do with my hands, I can't sit still all the way through a movie.
19My legs are always moving when I'm sitting down. Like if I notice it then stopping is almost impossible.
20I know someone that is worse than me, he's always moving his legs and sometimes it gets annoying sitting next to him. lol
I'm always fidgeting!! It really annoys people, but when they tell me to stop jiggling my foot, I just jiggle my toes instead. I don't know what it is but I'm very restless, I can't sit still for too long.
And I also talk with my hands.
21No. I can sit and stand in repose.
I think this because I'm a dancer. I do not make any extra, unnecessary movements. This is ingrained in me.
22Weirdly, the leg shake is not acceptible in my culture... apparently it's linked to prostitution(!) and is downright offensive in the eyes of the older generation!
23I'm a natural fidgeter though, so I just wriggle my toes a lot inside my shoes when I feel the urge, haha. That way I won't get told off!
