Yoga Can Help Improve Speech

Children at St. Rita's School for the Deaf in Cincinnati, Ohio are involved in a unique yoga program. Although the children taking yoga can hear, they can't speak due to a condition known as apraxia. Ellen Brigger, a teacher at St. Rita's, explains that apraxia is “an oral motor condition that affects sequencing of the muscles, so that when a child would go to speak, the muscle isn't getting the proper sequence for speech.” Essentially, these kids have a hard time putting sounds and syllables together in the correct order to form words.

In this yoga movement class, they don't just move their bodies. They make sounds to accompany breathing, and this helps with their speech. Check out this video to learn more.
