As if we haven't had enough of recall madness, yet another item has been recalled.
The FDA has put out a release announcing the recall of olives made by Charlie Brown di Rutigliano & Figli S.r.l, of Bari, Italy. The reason for the recall? Apparently the olives may be contaminated with the deadly bacterium, Clostridium botulinum. C. botulinum, which can cause botulism, a potentially fatal illness. What's more? Charlie Brown and Co. initiated a recall of these olives on March 27, 2007 but to date, the company has not contacted importers with specific instructions on the recall so the FDA had to step in.
The olives are sold under the following brands: Bonta di Puglia, Cento, Corrado's, Dal Raccolto, Flora, Roland and Vantia, and have codes that start with the letter "G" and are followed by 3 or 4 digits. All sizes of cans, glass jars and pouches of Cerignola, Nocerella and Castelvetrano type olives are affected.
Symptoms of botulism include general weakness, dizziness, double vision, trouble with speaking or swallowing, difficulty in breathing, weakness of other muscles, abdominal distension and constipation. People experiencing these symptoms should seek immediate medical attention. Here's an idea: how about checking to make sure stuff isn't deadly BEFORE it's shipped out. Hmmmm...
1I know that sometimes this isn't possible, but seriously. This is the third recall in what, two months? What's going on?
2Im so tired of this , you have to wonder everyday if what you are about to eat may be recalled... but the thing that sucks you wont know till after you get sick. Now I have a habit of buying things and waiting till near the expiration date to eat them , that will give me atleast a week or two or longer to wait to hear if something is bad before it gets consumed in my house. It shouldnt have to be that way , our goverment needs to get on this! Imagine what can be done on PURPOSE to our food supply , if all THIS stuff is happening by accident!
3I haven't had any experiences with getting food items recalled. Hope it never happens!
4UGH! all these recalls are terrible. these ppl have a RESPONSIBILITY to make sure this kinda crap doesnt happen!!
5Correction from the FDA's site: Last week it was inaccurately reported that the Borrelli brand of olives was part of the olive recall. Borrelli Gourmet Foods Co. of Canada purchases olives from Charlie Brown di Rutigliano & Figli S.r.l in 10 pound plastic pails and sells the olives as the Borrelli brand. At this time the 10 pound pails of Cerignola, Nocerella, and Castelvetrano type olives manufactured and sold by Charlie Brown di Rutigliano & Figli S.R.l are not part of the recall.
