I believe that depriving yourself of any kind of food leads to a will power meltdown and quite often a binge. On the other hand what if to motivate yourself to workout, you deprived yourself of a favorite CD until your workout. I go through phases with music and always seem to have an "IT" album. Songs from that album are always running through my head and it is always so satisfying to listen to the music. So I hold off on listening to the "IT" album until I am ready to workout.
My favorite CD right now is Franz Ferdinand's You Could Have Been So Much Better. I just can't seem to listen to it enough, especially now that it is reserved for running. Talk about motivation on those days when the idea of running seems impossible - if I run I will get my Franz "fix." Then I start to hear the phantom guitars. I begin humming the lyrics and I get excited since I know I will get to satisfy my music craving. I put on my shoes, find my iPod, click on Franz and I am out the door.
I am wondering what album would be your deprivation/motivation CD? Let me know below.

Prada
I usually listen to NPR when I run and love it! I am very used to having it on so that I follow the news/discussion and not so much the time on the treadmill
But I am now training for a half-marathon where headphones are not allowed, and am wondering
how to wean myself off of my radio routine. Any tips would be great. Thanks!
1The Police greatest hits is a great cd to work out to. I know all the words so I sing to which helps level my breathing and I burn more calories

2I like to listen to Beck for some reason. It's funky, fun and funny, keeps me going!
3Rookie, Listen to your NPR and music as much as you want training. I promise on race day, you'll never miss it. Race day is a 110% totally different experience. The adrenaline and crowd and other runners will motivate you in a whole new way!
I never run at the gym without music and I've done 3 marathons and 10 1/2 marathons! Just make sure you run outside once in a while without the head phones. Good luck! I'm so excited whenever I hear about someone doing their first big race, it's the best experience in the world.

5double post. DOH!
6Lily Allen is my cd of obcession right now.
7Thanks lawyerjenn! I have done a 12k and a 10k and a few 5k runs, so I can definitely relate to the race-day atmosphere. I hope that will make me forget my lack of headphones! Also, this half marathon is a trail run, so I am definitely planning to go out and run on some trails/hills to get used to the terrain (I hike a lot on hills/mountains but have never run!).
Thanks again, and wow about your marathons!
8I have to listen to podcasts when i am on the eliptical - it is the only way to keep me on the machine!!!! But I don't listen to them at other times,so I guess I am already doing this - LOL.
9I'm constantly creating new playlists to listen to while working out. They tend to be upbeat mixes of dance, funk, pop and rock music. Music most definitely motivates me.
10How dare you suggest that about my BEST FRIEND! Seriously, though...I couldn't get through the day at work without my iPod. But it makes sense!! Hope it works for some people!
11^Butrfly4404 i agree with you.
Music is my obsession. I love it.
12But it IS a great motivation.
I'm thinking of trying it.
Wish me luck!
Oddly, one of my favorite motivation CDs is Leave a Whisper by Shinedown. I have a thing for hard rock, I guess. I also like bhangra music like Bar Bhangra, even though I can't sing along.
13I looove Relient k's new album "Five Score and Seven Years Ago," as well as Switchfoot's "Oh!Gravity" Both are super energetic and fun
I also have some OK Go, Paolo Nutini, P!nk, Lenny Kravitz, Britney Spears, Hellogoodbye, and
Will Smith. Anything with a heavy beat and some motivating lyrics keep me goin!
"[God] is not proud...He will have us even though we have shown that we prefer everything else to Him."

Mostly I listen to mixes or playlists that are heavy with hip hop, pop, and dance music. But a great album to play during a workout is Version 2.0 by Garbage. It is about 45 minutes long, a decent length for an aerobic workout, and the beat and pace keeps me motivated.
15it kindof sounds lame but i absolutely love ok go's cd oh no. it gets my heart racing just listening to it. there are also these great podcasts on itunes called podcasts for running that get you started from the couch to a 5k and these others that are mixes that are new every week.
16I usually listen to Pat Benatard, Black Eyed Peas, Veronicas, or Jem while running.
17same to me, black eyed peas are good for running. i like the prodigy, too.
