A little workout nostalgia — I was just thinking back to when I first started exercising, thanks in large part to my dad. Outside of required gym class or a sports team, I was trying to remember when fitness became important to me, and landed right at about eighth grade.
Around the end of middle school, beginning of high school, I started to pay attention to other girls and the way my own body was shaping up. At the same time, I was being exposed to new ways to work out. During high school, I was offered the choice of a regular P.E. class, or a semester of yoga and Pilates. I chose the latter and have been hooked ever since. Additionally, my dad used to ask me along to his training sessions at the gym, where working with his trainer helped to give me a better understanding of fitness and what I could do on my own to stay healthy.
Since then, I've made a conscious decision to keep myself fit — a lifestyle choice that I attribute to such a great introduction to working out during my early high school years. Obviously fitness is important at any age, but I'm curious, when did you first get into a fitness routine?

I remember a group of us kids in our garage where my brother kept his weights. A boy my age (about 15) tried to overhead lift a barbell and couldn't. My brother asked me to try and...I DID IT! I had never tried to lift before and took myself completely by surprise. I've never been much into sports and was never a joiner. The workouts I've done all my life have mostly been on my own at home with what I have accumulated over the years. I have taught myself with videos, DVDs and magazines. A few years ago I did join a kickboxing class with 3 of my much younger coworkers. Since I don't work out with others, I didn't have anyone to measure myself against, but once again, I left them in the dust. And by the way, I am 49 years old!
1I started when I was about 15. I found the perfect motivation. Work on your biceps until huge. Then you'll see that your triceps are puny. Then do lots of pushups. Now you'll notice that though your chest and arms are great, your legs are pencil. Just standing squats will take care of that. And then lying on your back, and doing bridges. Great hamstring and glute exercise.
2It's barely been half a year since I started working out on a regular basis. As a kid I had always been in very bad physical shape (but never fat) and it wasn't up till a few years ago that I started taking an interest in exercise. I'm 18 and this year our P.E. teacher wanted everyone to start a workout journal if they wanted good grades. It was because of this that I've really started working out for real.
I love the way my body has changed and I have taken a bigger interest in my health in general.
3I played sports until about 16 years old when I tore my ACL. I started working out after that bc the recovery called for ellipticals, weights, etc. Plus I could not play soccer anymore.
4High school was the first time I worked out just to work out without gym class or a team as a reason, but I'd been playing sports since kindergarten before that. I never really worked out consistently until law school though (which is about when I started to need it).
5I swam competitively since I was a little kid, all the way through 3rd year of college. Now it's all about running and cycling
6I was in gymnastics (well, tumbling really) by the time I could walk, basically.
7I also would go a long with my mom to the track when I was 2 or 3 and toddle around there.
Since then I've done soccer, ballet, tae kwan do, wushu-kungfu, swimming, yoga, pilates, etc.
I first went to a gym in high school, but I started running and biking outside in middle school.
I like being active, but right now I'm really bored with the gym and kind of out of shape so running outside intimidates me. I hope it's just a phase.....lol.
I'm grateful my mom started me young!
got bord few years back during summer of 7-8th grade and started going to the gym. I wasn't overweight, but i lost 10 pounds in a two months and was amazed, cuz that wasn't the original plan. as a high schooler, i independetly run and do yoga and crew is coming up soon. i also hit the ymca a few times a week. now, i don't know how i lived with out cardio!
8my parents didn't even ask me, they just took me to tennis lessons when i was 8
fitness is life. though it never stuck with me. i work out maybe once a month and struggle to keep up with it
9My Ma always told me I didn't walk... i took off running...lol. I've always been active since step one and really can't remember a time when I wasn't. In middle and high school I was in track and on the girls softball team. Now I practice muay thai kickboxing, yoga and still run of course.... and weight train.
10In high school I was always involved in sports. I was either doing volleyball, basketball, or swimming. I wanted to be the best and strongest in everything, so my dad helped me start a work out in addition to my practices. I feel out of this when I first started college, but got back into it a couple years later. It really is great for the mind and body.
11I played sports in high school -- field hockey, lacrosse, swimming.. in college I worked out for fitness/ stress reduction. It wasn't until law school when I started distance running and ran my first marathon. Started doing triathlons a couple of years ago.
12I've been working out ever since elementary school - playing sports, etc... but I really got into a routine at the beginning of high school where I made it a point to work out EVERY day for an hour or more! I love exercise and will NEVER miss a day, even if I am sick to my stomach or... have the flu!
13As a kid, I didn't really play sports or do anything organized, but I did like to ride my bike and go rollerskating a lot. I also liked to jump rope, so I did that a lot too. I didn't start "working out" until I got into college and started losing weight. I knew I could get a lot healthier if I added exercise to my diet program, so I started walking regularly. Then I added in running and started doing strength training and I've been exercising ever since.
14Giasbash... that's very unhealthy -- both mentally and physically. Working out when you have the flu doesn't show dedication. I'm not diagnosing over the internet, but look up "compulsive exercise" or "anorexia athletica". Even people who train 20 hours/ week set aside time to rest and recover.
15I started when I was about 12 years old. I used to exercise to fitness videos at home.
When I was about 13 years old, I joined organized sports, and competed.
After several years of organized sports, I exercised on my own. I've hired personal trainers, taken certain fitness classes, and developed my own exercise regimen.
Basically, I've been exercising for over 20 years. It's a mainstay in my life.
16I've been playing sports since kindergarten - soccer, softball, and track. My dad used to make me run. At first I complained, but when I got good I started to love it. I've kept with cross country and track all the way to college.
17Ever since middle school, I think when I was at the age of 12. I started playing field hockey then, and fell in love with team sports! I've done field hockey, track, lacrosse, and gymnastics. Since starting college, trying to get workouts in is a struggle, but I love running and the elliptical machine. I'm trying to pick up the habit of pilates though, that I can do in my room
18I never played sports but I've been exercising on my own since primary school. It wasn't a proper 'workout' routine like now, but I used to often take my bike out and I'd show off and do push-ups and sit-ups haha, I could do so many push-ups when I was younger!
19I started swimming at age 6, volleball by age 8 & basketball by 10. We also lived on a farm. I started riding horses basically at birth. So between Sports, working on the farm & my mother's unnatural body issues, I've been involved in all kinds of exercise for a very long time.
20I had never exercised before turning 40. Four months after my 40th birthday is when I walked into the gym, that was almost 2 years ago and I've been going every day since. I've lost over 50% of my bodyfat and I'm in the best shape of my life. I can't believe it took me so long to do this. I tell people all the time, start early, don't wait until you're 40. Although it can be done after 40, you'll be so much happier if you learn to incorporate fitness and good nutrition into your life before then.
21I always played sports up until high school. Freshman year I played field hockey and I did Irish step dancing until I went off to college. THroughout college I would go to the gym here and there or go for a run or take a class. It actually wasnt until this summer that I started working out every day. Then I took about a month off, but after getting engaged its time for me to start up again!!!
22I started actually going to the gym when I was 16 even though I had no idea what I was doing. Since then I have done home workouts, running, yoga, different gyms, etc. This year I decided it was time to lift some weights. I got pretty slim when I was running a lot but didn't like how I looked or felt so I researched weight lifting and got into. So even though things have changed as far as what I am doing, I have been working out since high school.
23I did gymnastics from an early age (5 or 6?). But I took several years off from regular exercise after puberty. I started going to the gym in college, did Jazzercise in grad school, and got a treadmill after I bought my house.
24I joined my first track team in elementary (local community thing), but didn't get serious about competitive running until high school.
I also did dance on and off for several years....really wish I would have stuck with that. My sister and I started at the same time and now she's dancing professionally. *sigh* Then again, I was second varsity and team captain of my cross-country team in high school and running helped me cope with feeling like a nerd/loser in school, so I guess things didn't turn out so bad. I'm still in love with running to this day!
25I'd say I really got into working out after I broke my sacrum and coccyx (tailbone) at the beginning of highschool. That put me out of gym class for a year and my H.S. did water therapy for that first year. Then when I was a sophomore, my H.S. taught me yoga instead of putting me in a regular gym class ( I still could not sit on my butt without pillows) and I got hooked on yoga and made that a major part of my workout, even to this day.
My coccyx sticks slightly out now and my husband calls it his little love nub.
26I began working out at 11 years old. I was getting ready to play football for my 1st season. I have been lifting weights every since.
The most interesting side note is that I have found that all of my boot camp clients that began working out in high school or before last longer, & are mentally tougher than those who waited until later in life to begin working out. Those who did not workout as teenagers or earlier, seem to find my boot camp overwhelming, & as more of a negative experience.
Very interesting considering that most americans who do not workout on a consistent basis are obese. We need to keep P.E. in schools!
Fitness Love.
