The magic pill to weight loss is a mirage in my opinion, but companies continue to design products to help you burn more calories and drop pounds. As if the seven shady weight loss products I recently posted about weren't enough, I just discovered Body Togs Wearable Weights.

At first I thought they were for strength training exercises instead of dumbbells or resistance bands. Since you didn't have to hold them, they seemed like a cool idea. But taking a closer look, these aren't meant for the gym — they're meant to be worn all day long to help boost the amount of calories you burn and tone your muscles while doing day-to-day activities. Tiny weights are evenly distributed around each sleeve, adding about one to three pounds to each limb, depending on the size you choose. You're supposed to wear these arm and calve sleeves under your clothes. I guess if it's hot that day, you just wear them to match your favorite dress. Aside from looking completely idiotic, they're very pricey ($55 to $59 a pair), and also a health risk. To find out why read more.
Performing strength training exercises that are specifically designed to target certain muscles are excellent for your body. When you use correct form, and the appropriate amount of weight, there is little risk of injury. On the other hand, carrying around extra weight on your arms and legs while going about your day may burn extra calories, but it will also increase your risk for a torn muscle or injury to your joint. Just like walking with dumbbells or ankle weight is a big no-no, you don't want to do regular activities while carrying weights because it puts too much stress on your body.
If you want to burn extra calories during your day, fit in an extra 30 minutes of cardio. If toning your muscles is your goal, it's more effective to use dumbbells, resistance bands, or weight machines and do actual exercises that are meant for strengthening your muscles. Setting aside time to exercise will not only produce better results, but it's a great way to relieve stress and give you the much-deserved break we all need during the day.

Wonderbra
I had no idea that such a product was out. How ridiculous to wear weights while doing everyday activities. Isn't that what your daily work-out is for? I don't want to be focused on my work out while I am at the office. I want to leave the office, go to the gym and relieve stress. Same thing with those new Sketcher Shape-Up walking shoes. Loose weight while walking every day....Have you heard that those actually help?
1"I guess if it's hot that day, you just wear them to match your favorite dress."
LOL!
2I agree with you fit. When I was in high school I decided to wear ankle weights out on a walk.. boy, that was an awful idea. I definitely injured myself.
My fiance and I sit down for an hour to an hour and a half of tv a night. I like to sit on an exercise ball for half of it, and cuddle with him for the other half. I find my self bouncing on the ball, doing a few crunches, other exercises, balancing myself, every once in a while I grab the dumbells to do some curls and presses. All extra calories burned and I don't have to really "fit" it into my schedule.
I will also take two steps at a time when I am going upstairs in my house sometimes. A little extra burn on the tush.
You also burn calories doing housework - washing the dishes, making the bed, folding laundry, sweeping the floor, scrubbing the tub, gardening. Whenever I'm feeling like I want to burn a few extra calories, I do a couple other household activities.
3They are terrible for you. Your body and skeleton are meant for an equilibrium. Those kinds of weights throw them out of balance. Stop. Wait. Don't.
4it would be kind of like gaining 10-15 pounds; you would be walking around with that extra weight... it seems like the weight is distributed a little better than if you were just using ankle weights or dumbbells. (of course, not exactly distributed as if you gained weight either). I wouldn't purchase these, but I see where they're going with this idea, and can't imagine they would be that dangerous.
5Weights that you wear on your wrists/ankles are definitely dangerous...if you want to burn a couple extra calories by doing everyday things, wear a weighted vest. The weight is distributed over your center of gravity and it's not so dangerous.
6I see these on sale at the chemist all the time, they're the last thing I'd buy.. I don't believe they'd work, just another big gimmick.
7 Body Togs are not like Ankle or Wrist weights. Body Togs have been anatomically designed by Bariatric Physician Ayaz Virji, MD. The design mimics the fleshy portion on the calf and forearm and does not put undue stress on sensitive parts of the body. While wearing them, you forget you have them on while you are burning more calories, building muscle tone and increasing bone density. They are designed to enhance your weight loss & fitness efforts and are not a replacement for your daily exercise or nutritional program. I have been wearing them for 4 years and they have helped me to keep my weight down as my metabolism changes.
