wow. its interesting. but the lighting up with the fire at the end of it is a wee bit much.

it DOES get the point across tho, very clearly

I don't think it does a good job of illustrating how secondhand SMOKE is harmful. It's more about uh, don't set your baby on fire. People are going to look at this and think, "I would never do that!" NOT "I've never thought about it that way before..."

I would assume that by now - most people know about smoking and health - they just don't care...

I think this commercial is great because it makes you really pay attention (and hopefully think). It makes me sick when I see people smoking around their children or while pregnant. Bonne's right, everyone knows smoking is bad for your health, but for some reason people choose to ignore the harm they are doing to their loved-ones.

It's definitely an attention-getter, but I think it should have supplied more information on what that means. 80 babies died...how? They didn't go up in flames. Respiratory failure? SIDS? Inquiring minds want to know!

having done advertising before, sometimes they just want to give enough info to make you go WHAT!?!?!? so tt it'll get your interest, in the hopes that you'll DO something about it, like read up on it or something. by making the target audience (Us) perform an action its considered an achievement.

personally, i think mandy has a point, but bonne is right too. we need something more dramatic as a wake up call at this day and age.

but the 80 babies dying was new to me! its so sad Sad

In the forties, fifties, sixties, parents smoked around their children and there was no widespread reporting of infant death as a result. I am not saying that this commercial is inaccurate, but I am saying that smoking is not an automatic death sentence for every child.

Frankly my thoughts on smokers and their complete lack of regard for anyone other than themselves makes it hard for me to comment on these topics without crossing the realm into flat out rudeness.

Yes, this definitely makes its point, to people who don't smoke. For people that do smoke, they are going to believe what they want and most likely they are going to just continue a) not caring about anyone but themselves or b) reason this away with some faulty logic and delusional thinking.

I don't understand it - I know people know it's bad, but they continue to do it. It's great that Bangor, Maine has banned smoking in cars when kids are present - it should be required everywhere.

Smokers are clearly uncaring and selfish. If you are a parent and smoke, you put your own wants over the well being of your kids. Pregnant women who smoke.. don't even get me started.

This ad, is just ok. I'd rather see kids talking about all the things wrong with them because their parent smoke.

Showing litle kids talking is more effective.

i think its a sweeping statement to say "smokers are clearly uncaring and selfish". i have tons of friends who smoke, but when they do, they make an effort to stand where the wind blows the smoke away etc etc.

there are lots of reasons why people smoke, but to categorize them like that is kinda unfair to them. what happened to "dont judge a book by its covers"?

dont get me wrong, im not saying that smoking is good. and i dont abide by pregnant women who smoke too.

chatnoir, I love your idea to have kids talking in the commercial! My cousin and his wife both smoke and she lost a baby from a previous relationship to SIDS and then their child together developed such severe asthma that he was hospitalized many times.
As for smokers being polite about where/when they smoked...one of my boyfriends college friends actually told me it bothered her when people coughed while she was smoking around them. & I've actually never met a smoker who stopped smoking around me BEFORE I told them not to smoke around me.

I've always said "When I smoked, I was a selfish, littering, cancer-causing b*tch...not that you are, but you do stink."

My step daughter gets lung infections if she so much as passes by a cigarette. Her birth mother gets them 1 night every two weeks and refuses to stop smoking around her. I plan on using that if we ever get into a custody thing - there have been several cases where one parent has lost their children because their smoking was considered neglect and abuse. We used to smoke but tried to be "polite" about it...we smoked in the bathroom because of the fan. But you know, wherever smoke settles, it leaves a TOXIC DUST?

My mom smoked and ended up with two kids with asthma. I can't really blame her for mine, as it came on when I was 18, but my older brother had severe asthma growing up.

I dont' understand smoking anymore at all. I was the kind of person who said "I like to smoke and I'm NEVER going to quit!" (Even with asthma - I'm a smart cookie!) Then I got pregnant and couldn't bring myself to do it. I don't know how anyone could just blow toxic smoke around their kids and not think twice about it...even though I did it (To be fair to me, I didn't really feel like their mom until they'd lived with me for a while, but STILL).

The sad thing is that smokers aren't affected by these commercials. Non-smokers all say "Aww, those poor kids" but smokers always try to come up with an excuse *cough cough addiction* as to why it's bogus.

I'm still hoping for a state-wide smoking ban here in MN so I can take my girl out to dinner.

i didnt know about the toxic dust! oh wow, it must be tough on your step daughter, you're really sweet to her! Laughing out loud

i think its always hard to have a one-off stand about this kinda topic. im still a student and dont have kids, but i alr know that i would NV smoke ard kids.

on the other hand, im OK when my friends smoke around me.
