Ever since we've heard about Tyra Banks boxing her way into a bikini, I've noticed an interest in boxing for weight loss. Female boxing notable, Mia St. John, is a good source on this subject and she provides these tips:
- Cardio to the Rescue: Jumpstart your weight loss routine with cardiovascular exercise to get your heart pumping. Excessive perspiration from running, aerobic gym equipment and jumping rope will help you de-bloat and lose inches and pounds quickly. St. John recommends doing cardio several days a week as a warm up for 10-15 minutes, or as a workout for at least 30 minutes, in order to get your heart rate up.
- High Protein, Low Carbs: Eliminating white carbohydrates while eating lean protein for a couple of weeks is great for quickly dropping pounds for an event or jump starting your fitness program. Lean protein is important for growth and to build and repair bones and muscle. Fill your diet with fibrous carbohydrates, such as berries and spinach, as well as poultry, fish, eggs, and low-fat dairy.
- Punch Up Your Workout: Spice up your workout by adding punches to your routine. "Lunges and crunches help tone abs, thighs and glutes," says St. John. "By adding punches to lower body workouts, you'll also be working arms and back, making a full-body workout in less time." The added moves also keep your heart rate elevated for added perspiration and calories burned.
- Perishable Foods: Too much salt isn't healthy, especially for someone trying to lose a few pounds. Excess salt can result in high blood pressure, and causes the body to retain water. "Stock your refrigerator with perishable foods to eliminate much salt, fat and added chemicals found in processed and canned foods," explains St. John. "And drink water throughout the day to get rid of toxins and flush the system, keeping your body healthy and hydrated."

Very cool.
1It works. I started a workout like this a couple of months ago, and am quite impressed with the results.
2Great workout tips. I'm going to be applying them before my summer trip.
3Ahhh...and I really like the idea of boxing!!

Her tips aren't too bad except for two things:
1.Yes you will lose water weight when you do intensive cardio exercise, but it comes right back on once you drink or eat something.
Fad diets, diet teas, and diet pills are laxative or diuretic in nature for this very reason. People see a loss on the scale and think they are losing fat, but are in fact dehydrated or have an empty digestive system.
If sweat alone could burn fat, then I would pull up a lawn chair and soak up the Louisiana heat. LOL
A tape measure (the kind you find in a sewing kit, not a toolbox) and how your pants fit are better measures of fat loss.
2.Crash or yo-yo dieting for an event is always a bad idea. The dieter almost always packs on extra pounds afterwards.
The better alternative is to maintain a healthy weight. If you aren't there yet, then find an awesome outfit that you feel great in to wear.
And while whole grains are superior (more nutritious and filling) to white flour, eliminating white flour will not make the pounds melt off any faster.
Not to mention that low carb isn't for everyone especially if you do something like run for exercise.
The best way to approach weight loss is to workout most days of the week (gradually adding intensity as fitness increases), and to try to eat as healthfully as possible everyday. Treats are okay as long as they are in moderation.
