Turn Signal Bicycling Jacket: Cool or Not?

This Turn Signal Biking Jacket, designed by Leah Buechley, uses wrist-mounted switches to activate LED arrows on the back. It's easier than using old-fashioned hand-turn signals, and the lights provide an added element of safety.

Though it's not for sale — I think it's just a prototype — this could be a smart purchase for cyclists. What do you think?

I voted "cool" but really it should be more like "not cool, but willing to wear it for the safety factor anyway." I'm actually about to order a hideous bright orange motorcycle jacket because I'd rather be "dorky and alive" than "cool but dead." By the way, they do make black reflective tape (reflects BRIGHT white but looks black in daylight) so that jacket might not be as "invisible" to drivers as you think.

It's cool in function but really un-cool in the looks department. It seems like something a kid would get teased for in a movie.

so cool! I'm a cyclist, and while I don't bike much at night (or even at dusk) this would be very helpful. Hopefully the novelty factor would help cars to see you - maybe even in the daylight. (Since the defense when drivers run over cyclists, or knock us down, or cut us off, or...whatever, is that they "didn't see" us. My own crabby belief is that if more drivers would get off their cell phones and start looking at the road, that problem might be diminished.)

This just screams "DORK ALERT!!" I don't bike at night because of the safety factor anyway, so I just use hand signals and it works for me. I also am wondering why the jacket's black b/c it seems like it would be a better idea if the jacket were reflective or something.

Looks good, but could drivers find it hard to distinguish between the arrow lights and other lights at night? The black jacket would also make it hard to see the cyclist, especially if the car is next to or in front of the cyclist. Black jacket would also make it hard for the drivers to see how far out in the road the cyclist is if they cannot see the side of the cyclist, this could make it difficult for the drivers to know how much room to give cyclists? Personally I would feel safer in my reflective yellow and silver jacket and gloves.
