I'm not a big fan of detoxes. I think that in most cases, they're unnecessary for the average person. With that being said, there is nothing wrong with adding some good fruits and veggies with detoxifying properties to your existing diet to help keep things moving along.
You just don't have to torture yourself by drinking an unappatizing lemonade/maple syrup mixture for two weeks to gain the benefits. Yahoo has listed its top 10 detoxifying foods that you may want to think about adding to your diet. Here are highlights:
- Green leafy vegetables: Eat them raw, throw them into a broth, add them to juices. Their chlorophyll helps swab out environmental toxins (heavy metals, pesticides) and protects the liver.
- Lemons: Its vitamin C, considered the detox vitamin, helps convert toxins into a water-soluble form that's easily flushed away.
- Watercress: The peppery little green leaves have a diuretic effect that helps move things through your system. And cress is rich in minerals, too.
There's more so read more.
- Garlic: In addition to the bulb's cardio benefits, it activates liver enzymes that help filter out junk.
- Green tea: This antioxidant-rich brew is one of the healthiest ways to get more fluids into your system. Bonus: It contains catechins, which speed up liver activity.
- Broccoli sprouts: They pack 20 to 50 times more cancer-fighting, enzyme-stimulating activity into each bite than the grown-up vegetable.
- Sesame seeds: They're credited with protecting liver cells from the damaging effects of alcohol and other chemicals.
- Cabbage: There are two main types of detoxifying enzymes in the liver; this potent veggie helps activate both of them.
- Psyllium: A plant that's rich in soluble fiber, like oat bran but more versatile. It mops up toxins (cholesterol too) and helps clear them out.
- Fruits, fruits, fruits: They're full of almost all the good things above: vitamin C, fiber, nutritious fluids, and all kinds of antioxidants.

I know I sound dumb, but I still don't get what "detox" means exactly. To me it just sounds like a pseudo-scientific way of saying it makes you go to the restroom. Is this correct or is there more to it?
1I love my greens and fruit.
Emalove and I know someone who loves green smoothies for detox. Hahahahaha.
2I think eating foods like these on a regular basis is a better way of detoxing than spending a week mostly only having funny drinks. I've actually been wanting water cress for awhile, especially to include in this soup recipe I wanted to make or just include some in salads, but I never see it recently.
3everything but the watercress for me, I have been eating my fair share of the fruits this year for some reason
4Lime juice with warm water first thing in the morning works the best.
5cool, i been thinking about detoxing again...i just hate the caffein withdrawal
6I eat leafy greens, garlic, and fruit every day and they definitely help keep me feeling my best. I have never seen broccoli sprouts, but if I ever find them, I'll have to try those. They sound really good.
7Ya baby, I eat ALL THOSE ITEMS except for Fruit!!! Wahoo, I think I am going to live!
8nice to know that what i eat on a daily basis is working for me.
9Hey i do green smoothies - but not for "detox" lol they just are part of my routine.
I view detox the same way as one detoxing from drugs - you go through a period of withdrawal, whether it's physically or mentally, and then after that you generally forget about those bad foods and don't want to eat them again. It's a habit-breaking process.
10very insightful post. i eat a lot of those things daily, so i guess i'm on the right track!
11Thank you for the information.
12Hey Gumdrops334, you may need to go to the bathroom more. It's not like you won't be able to control yourself though.
Websters defines detoxification as: to free (as a drug user or an alcoholic or french fries) from an intoxicating or an addictive substance in the body or from dependence on or addiction to such a substance.
