Many jobs require you to sit for eight hours a day, and if you don't have time to break away for lunch, you may have to grab the quickest meal, which tends to be not so healthy. Then there are the office parties complete with chips, soda, and cake, the frequent Dunkin' Donuts runs, the co-workers who bring in baked goods weekly, and those who make microwave popcorn daily. Stress from your job and long hours make you feel too tired to work out, and all this can translate to an expanding waistline.

So for those of you working 9 to 5 (or longer), tell me, what are your tricks and secrets when it comes to avoiding office weight gain?

Dorothy Perkins
It's funny you asked! I *just* got back to my desk after another round of stairwell step climbing. I climbed a total of 688 steps today. My heart is racing and my legs are burning. That's the good pain, right?
1I work in advertising so it's even worse than the average office because we constantly have vendors bringing in lunch (everything from BBQ to cookies) and leftovers get left out for everyone to pick on. I just keep lots of healthy snacks around (fruit, Kashi granola bars and crackers) and bring my own lunch to avoid temptation.
2Packing ALL my snacks and lunch! If I have healthy foods, I'll eat them!!
3I almost always pack my own lunch (peanut butter and jelly) and bring two healthy snacks (today it was yogurt and grapes). I tell myself in the beginning of the day that I packed all the food I need for the 9 hours I'm at work, and I stick to that. I spend most of my lunch breaks walking outside (there's a park down the street) or running on the treadmill (my gym is 7 min. from my work giving me just enough time to drive there, change, run 3 miles, change, drive back.) Also, will power is key. Today was a birthday so there was chocolate cake, and I just think how much I'd have to exercise to burn off one piece - not worth it!
4I pack my lunch every day (actually the night before) and include healthy snacks. There is a chocolate tin right down from where I sit that the sales guys insist on keeping filled to "keep us happy"- personally I like it better when it is empty because it's not as tempting.
5I always pack my lunch and keep fruit at my desk or my cubby fridge. My lunch break is for my 45 minutes workout. The only bad thing is I eat my desk can drag a meal into 2 or 3 hours so I don't always feel full but I have an afternoon snack so I am never famished.
6***I eat at my desk*** I don't eat my desk...that would be weird.
7I plan ahead for my lunches and snacks and make them myself. I never eat out or use the vending machine. I also work with two guys, so there are never any treats and baked goods around. Oh, and having celiac disease keeps me far away from anything containing gluten, so I can't really stuff just any random thing in my face. heh
I think all this has helped me with my pregnancy. I am four months along and have only gained two pounds so far. I honestly eat all day, but everything is healthy and meets the nutritional needs of my body and the developing baby.
8I work in a hospital and people ALWAYS bring stuff in to the break room to snack on. I avoid taking snacks and I just eat the food I bring for myself. I also try to squeeze in a workout or a nice powerwalk during my lunch break if I can...it helps wake me up and gets the blood flowing.
9It's so hard because my boss buys so much stuff to stock our kitchen, but I limit myself to one unhealthy snack per day -- and it's usually small like a piece of dark chocolate.
10Our office is a disaster for your diet - always free pizza, doughnuts, cupcakes around.Fortunately,I have no problem resisting all this disaster.First,I always make sure to work out first thing in the morning (I run 5-7 miles,or take spinning class plus some strength training).Always take stairs instead of elevator (5th Floor:).Second,I make sure to have healthy protein packed breakfast and I'm usually not hungry until 2PM. I make sure to always go out for lunch and have a large fruit or veggie salad in the park nearby.Again,it fills me up and I'm good until dinner. At home its easier for me because my grilled chicken and veggies are always around:)
11in my canvas "bliss" lunch bag:
12staples:
one apple
one orange
turkey sandwich
options:
two dark choc squares
berries
carrots
celery
yogurt
I'm a vegan and so it is pretty easy to avoid raiding vending machines or giving in to temptation when coworkers bring in pizza or baked goods.
13I work at a gym and took the job because I knew it would be a healthy atmosphere!
14I don't avoid all of the free temptations, but I limit myself to one or two small ones a week.
15Pack a very healthy lunch before I go in. Whole grains, nuts, raw fruits and veggies, maybe some lean protein, and fat free yogurt. Drink only water and/or tea. At my job I run around so much, I swear I'm losing weight because of the lunches I usually bring and my activity level. I hadn't even realized until someone I hadn't seen in a while pointed out that I look like I've lost weight. Weighed myself and I've lost at leat 5 pounds in a few months. I may actually need to pack some low fat yogurt instead.

17I stopped carrying loose change. Whether it was $1 or 50 cents, I didn't take it to work. It stops me from buying a soda and chips and candy to get that little, worth-nothing jolt of energy to meet deadlines. I have also changed what I take for lunch at work and divide each part by hours. If I know that I will feel tense or tired, I keep a stash of cashews or almonds in my desk to add to salads or eat on their own to help curb sweet cravings.
18I always avoid the goodies table when it's someone's birthday (cakes, sweets, cheesy savoury treats etc) - I'd rather just grab a quick cup of tea and go back to my desk. I also usually have something healthy on hand like apples or almonds for snacks (but not too much - otherwise I'd end up eating an entire bag of nuts!), if not I just keep myself going with Rooibos tea before & after lunch.
For lunch, I usually go home (I live close enough) and eat how I would usually eat, or I go to a local spot that has healthy salads & other dishes.
I don't find it difficult at all, in fact. I find weekends much more stressful when it comes to avoiding bad food, because there's no routine to stick to!
19I'm like sonya ina. I have one unhealthy tidbit from the break room per day, and that's it.
20oh, and I always drink tea. Most workplace eating is out of boredom. The tea assortment (available in pretty much all office break rooms) is my savior!
21I graze on fruits and veggies and take a walk during my lunch break instead. Eating a big meal at midday makes me tired.
22I bring in fruits (when I remember), drink only water (I never carry change or cash, so I can't get anything from the snack or soda machine anyway). I work on the first floor and have made it a point to get my water/take my restroom break to the third floor. We have a restroom and a breakroom on my floor (obviously), but I feel every little bit counts, so whenever I need anything like that I go to the third floor for it using the stairs.
23COMMITMENT to just saying no!... and a whole lot of gum. I deal with his every freakin day. And one day... I wasn't having it anymore. I just say no. I keep a truck load of different kinds of sugarless gum in my desk. You'd be surprised how many things you say no to because you have some gum in your mouth.
**Note: I do breakdown at birthday's, though. I feel bad if I don't have a slice of cake. BUT I do have them cut a much smaller piece for me
24I make my own lunch and take my own snacks.
25i have a tin of unsweetened instant oatmeal at work. i eat that for breakfast with low fat milk & unsweetened cocoa, plus a banana or some nuts. i would eat a 700-cal lunch of protein and veggies. then a piece of fruit and nonfat yogurt for the afternoon snack. i would go to the gym 2-3x a week after work, before dinner, so what i eat for dinner pretty much just goes to my muscles.
26Everything is good in moderation - Eat small portions of everything and you can really eat anything you want....Some of these posts are rediculously strict and nobody can stick to them long term.
27I'm more savoury than sweet, so I'm not really tempted by cookies or cakes - I know they'll make my teeth hurt while I won't really enjoy them.
28My problem is we have a great cafe at my work place, so I feel too lazy to bring lunch I just think "oh that's ok I'll just get something from the cafe". And not only it's expensive, their food is also a bit rich.
I packed my lunch and try to pack enough for one or two healthy snacks during the day. I also avoid the breakroom, where there's usually free food. When there are birthdays or people bring treats in, I go but don't have a slice. I'm usually not the only one who abstains, so it doesn't make me feel awkward. I also did something a year ago where I kept a tally on a post-in on my wall of all the times I didn't have a piece or cake or a bagel at work. Looking at it made me realize I had the willpower to turn away so many times before, that I could surely do it again.
29i actually prefer eating at work. on weekends, i'm so bored in the afternoons i tend to graze.
30i have an hour lunch break, so i eat my healthy packed lunch and go for a walk (i work-out before/after work).
I always pack food for breakfast, lunch and snacks the night before so I don't have to worry about getting hungry and snacking. Also, I'm vegan, so it's easier to stay away from cakes and cookies and other stuff that my co-workers bring in - since I can't eat it anyway
31Always BRING your lunch! I have a healthy choice meal for lunch everyday...along with a yogurt for breakfast and a couple of 100 calorie packs in case I get hungry. I also buy a huge bag of carrots to keep in the fridge here. Also, if your office has bottled water in the fridge, take advantage of that! I drink 8-10 bottles a day, for free!
32I psych myself out of the food that's put out for co-workers most of the time. "You don't want that food that's been picked over/sitting out there for forever." It's really not worth it. Every now and then, sure, when the company sends up the treats just for our suite for the holidays but I have no problem avoiding the crappy cheap meeting leftovers.
I also have no problem being somewhat antisocial (friendly, but antisocial) at my office so I'm not dealing with the showers and parties and things. I'd rather eat with my real friends!
33I constantly drink tea and water. I'm the one that stocks the office with food so I avoid buying anything unhealthy.
We have juice drinks for my boss/dad, apple sauce, trail mix, and mix bars, fiber one bars and whatever sandwhich I make him in the morning. The trail mix is tricky because it's sooo yummy and I could easily devour an entire container.
I generally bring fresh fruit or vegetables with me to work to snack on, though i think I should start stocking the mini fridge with them. . .
34I keep Lean Cuisines in the fridge and 100 cal "desserts" in one of my desk drawers. I avoid most of the "food freebies". The gym (2 treadmills,, elliptical, and free weights) is 50 steps from my office. The kitchen is 10 steps from the shower room. I love it! Today I ran outside on a country road behind our office complex. In the evenings, I'm free to spend quality time with my family! I'll sleep well too!
35I prepare my lunches and snacks at home. Eating out screams weight gain, especially because you are not in full control of how much and what is put in the meal. Preparing my lunch/snacks at home allows me to portion control and be conscious of whether or not I am getting enough of my daily fruits/veggies/protein/fiber, etc. And if I get hungry at work?-- I try to drink water, and chew gum (that's my secret for when i get bored!)
36drink lots of water....i stopped drinking pop and already feel slimmer
37park farther from my bldg at work so ill walk more and..drink water..staying hydrated is key
