First, there was Pinkberry, then Red Mango, and now: SoGreen Yogurt. Apparently, if you're going to open a frozen-yogurt joint nowadays, it's imperative to have a color in the name. SoGreen is the latest follower of the real frozen yogurt trend. Rather than just being low fat or low cal like some softserve treats, this type of frozen yogurt contains active cultures that aid digestion and help boost your immune system.

Right now, SoGreen has just one store, and it happens to be on the same block as Sugar HQ. So I decided to taste test the yogurt and tell you all about it. For details on SoGreen and this yummy trend, read more.
In addition to SoGreen, this week San Francisco is also getting its first Yogen Früz, which is a real-yogurt chain based in Canada. Like Pinkberry, which was officially classified as frozen yogurt earlier this year, these soft, creamy treats are very tangy and just a little bit sweet.

SoGreen offers just three flavors — original (plain), strawberry, and green tea — along with a variety of fresh fruit, grain, and nutty toppings. I got the original flavor, topped with fresh strawberries; according to the SoGreen website, the small size (five ounces) has just 125 calories. I love the tangy yogurt taste, and I can satisfy my sweet tooth without putting a bunch of unnatural junk in my body.
At least, I don't think I'm putting junk in my body, but I must admit, I'm not entirely sure. After all, pinkberry had to tweak its formula after making false claims about its naturalness. But SoGreen certainly doesn't taste suspect; in fact, it tastes delicious. So tell me: Have you jumped on the real-frozen yogurt trend?

this place was awful. awfully crowded, awfully slow and inefficient, and awfully bad with cashier service and pricing. BUT, if there were one redeeming factor, it would be taste. unfortunately, also awfully icy (not creamy) + awfully unripe fruit = awful tasting.
i did, however, go on opening day, perhaps it was just working out the kinks of the business, but until a few more people rant and rave about it, i am staying away.
i recommend icebee down the street on mission.
1I'm kinda over the over paying for frozen yogurt. Hello, Drumsticks and Ben & Jerry Chocolate Frozen Yogurt with Fudge Brownies! Sometimes, even the Chocolate Malted Crunch from Rite Aid.
2I am a regular at Cafe Ambrosia which is in a little alley by Crocker Galleria. They have "plain" as well as some other delish flavors and most all of the topping choices I could ever want. I have heard a variety of complaints from other people in my building, that Sogreen is expensive, small portions, line moves slow, which is enough that makes me never want to bother.
PS...love the new yogurt place on Chestnut!
3I don't have of those unless I go to the city to get to a Pinkberry, which I won't be doing. I rather just have some Greek yogurt with honey. I might even try out putting it in the freezer a little bit on hot days before eating it.
4We were supposed to be getting a pinkberry then it suddenly went away. But there's a yogurt place in town that's new called MangoTree and it' SUPER good. They have some great gelato flavors (like red orange and grapefruit) but I always get their plain yogurt with raspberries! Mmmmmmmm
5If there is ever a dairy-free option at any of these places, I'm so there.
6i loooove frozen yogurt especially if it's tangy. mMmMmm
7You guys in LA are soooo lucky! I love frozen yogurt and that looks so tempting. I feel so deprived here on the East Coast.
8There a new spot every other corner in LA. I don't think its that good and to be honest, Pinkberry kinda freaked em out when they wouldn't release their ingredient list originally. So I've stayed clear of this trend.
9But Rose Cullen, some places on the East Coast have Tasti D-Lite and Dunkin' (I would go for the coffee) - so the west coasters have a few reasons to be jealous!
10Im down in silicon valley, and we have Fraiche which is REAL yogurt (no unnatural stuff) and they serve it fresh or frozen. I think it tastes even better than pinkberry, and I love pinkberry. They even have a dairy free soy version!!
11Mmmm, I'd love to try it...I'm a big fan of frozen yogurt.
12Frozen yogurt is like a cult. I second the drumsticks!
13Ok, so we have like ZERO fro-yo places here in the midwest. Cold-Stone Creamery is about the closest we have. So what I do when I want frozen yogurt is to stick a yogurt in the freezer and when it gets hard, I put it in the blender and pulse it up. It's a tad less creamy than say Pinkberry, but you can't beat the price.
14What about Yogurtland? This place is great--you create your own sundae self serve. Choose the flavor and add in fresh fruit topping, chunks of cheesecake, cookie dough, cereal and all that good stuff. And supposedly it has active cultures.
15I went to Pinkberry once and was very disappointed. The flavor (I tried the green tea with chopped fresh kiwi fruit) was good, but the texture was terrible--all grainy and thin. My vote for very best froyo is at the Bloomingdale's cafe. They also have plain, plus a bunch of different toppings. I used to work across the street from the Soho store and would indulge in a cup topped with wheat germ whenever I needed a treat.
16just to let you know, red mango was created in korea before pinkberry
17I know gelato is not exactly low-calorie, but the yogurt gelato at La Copa Loca in the Mission (Capp and 22nd--SF) is soo yummy. And I just get a small scoop, so I don't feel guilty. And because it is so satisfying, I don't feel like I need anything else.
18Yes yes yes! Fraiche yogurt in downtown Palo Alto is simply deliciouso~ organic, fat free yogurt with active cultures! yummm
19yogen fruz is so delicious. i love it. had it when i was in asia. yummy.
20Haha, Yogen Fruz has been around for ages...I can't believe the yogurt trend has only just started in the US!?
21Good lord...
22the only one here in austin so far sucks. I went to Yogurtland a couple weeks ago in LA and it was AMAZING. Pinkberry was good too, but way too expensive, and I liked that you picked out everything yourself and it was priced by weight at YL. I wish we'd get more of those here in Texas
23Yeah, a bunch of other countries already had frozen yog and in the us it is just starting...
24I'm a big fan of the Red Mango. So yummy and it's such a better alternative to ice cream
25you guys really do have the best job...not only do you get to report on the best stuff that's going on in each category - but you get the cool 'food' places. i'm in NYC and we don't have anything like that - no local stuff - everything's super franchised. i'm going to have to live with my jamba juice (mind you there's not even one close to my office), or Pinkberry (which i've only seen 1 and it's even FARTHER from anywhere that i go each day)
26kimdangirl, I agree!! Red Mango is SO SO SO good. There are a few of them opening up here in NYC and I know of 2 of their locations that are right across the street from Pinkberry. Talk about competition. Anyone try Flurt?? That's here in NYC and some friends of mine like that.
27I had it yesterday for the first time and I'm going back today. It's delish and totally cured my sweet tooth.
28don't live in the LA area or the bay area? and want some frozen yogurt??
if you live in the sacramento area you should try Yog-Yog Frozen Yogurt.
visit the website: http://www.yog-yog.com
29yeah, red mango was first. Plus they really are a low fat frozen yogurt, as opposed to Pinkberry who says they are, but lab tests on their yogurt proves differently. Haven't heard of gogreen though. I wonder how long this trend will last.
30I hope I could find any of those stores in upstate NY. Too bad, I live in a small place that I might not have a chance to try it.
31ilnac13-- there are about 5 or 6 Pinkberries in NYC! How do I know this... I looveeee Pinkberry!
Check pinkberry dot com for locations.
I drag all my friends there. I don't know about this RedMango and SoGreen though. I think I'll give RedMango a try, but Pinkberry will always hold a special place in my heart
