Snack Attack: Pre and Post Workout Snacks

People are always asking me what makes good pre- and post-workout snacks and so I am always on the lookout for them. As you can imagine, I was thrilled to see that MSNBC recently did an article on the best fuel for your workout and they are:

Before the workout:

  • A banana with yogurt.
  • A whole-wheat toasted bagel with fruit spread.
  • A quick bowl of instant oatmeal.

For a quick refuel after the workout, just read more.

After the workout:

  • A peanut butter sandwich.
  • A small handful of walnuts or almonds.
  • A fruit smoothie with some protein powder.

Of course if you have time you can always try the eggs and toast breakfast or just a glass of chocolate milk.

So I have a question... what is the deal with yeast action? When I played soccer in college my coach noted that a few ounces of beer would be a good idea if she condoned drinking. In the last number of years I have done a few road races (including one a few weeks ago) and in our post-race area we were given salty snacks, some beer, bananas, and water. I gotta say I enjoy a little beer, some chips, and banana after a LONG run.

what about snacks/mini-meals for post-workouts in the evening?
what if you usually finish exercising in the evening. isn't that too late for a peanut butter sandwich?

If that's too much food, just do half a sandwich or whatever it is. I usually just go the easy route and have a protein shake and an apple or something. Protein powders aren't as yucky as they used to be. We get cookies and cream. Super good mixed with Chocolate soy milk!
I exercised 2 hours every morning - in order to fuel me up, I had the following every day an hour before my actual workout. (1) PB and J Sandwich (2) 8 oz coffee After workout, I will have the following:- (3) 1 cup of cereal with half a cup of 2% milk (4) 10 oz coffee I still find myself hungry around 11:30 with that.

Before a morning workout, I eat a FiberOne bar and ususally drink some water after eating it. The new apple streusel flavor is very tasty and would be super-good with coffee. I usually have an egg (scrambled or fried) with olive oil and a veggie sausage patty (They aren't as bad as they used to be either!). Of course, chocolate skim milk is a delicious addition.
