Sleep For Your Heart

Nothing beats falling into bed after a long, hard day and sleeping the night the away. But sleep is more than just a great way to end a hectic day. Not only does a good night's sleep help with weight loss, it can play a part in preventing breast cancer too. Now it has come to light that adequate sleep may prevent heart disease. New research found that lackluster performance in the sack — and by that I mean sleeping — may lead to hardening of the arteries, a condition considered a precursor to heart disease.

The relationship between lack of sleep and calcification of the arteries remains unclear, but one theory suggests that high blood pressure might be the reason. High blood pressure is a factor in the hardening of the arteries, and blood pressure decreases during sleep. So less sleep translates to a couple hours a day of higher blood pressure. Sleep is the body's true downtime, when it can repair the daily damage of life. Take care of yourself, and your heart, and get adequate sleep tonight.
