While I love having gym equipment at home, my one complaint is all the space it takes up. Since I don't have a designated fitness room, I try to buy things that can be easily hidden.

So instead of having several pairs of bulky hand-weights, think about investing in adjustable dumbbells. The Speed Pac ($46) gives you an entire set of weights in one, all you have to do is select your desired weight and then lift. You can choose between 2.5 lbs to 12.5 lbs of weight on each for a maximum of 25 lbs. total resistance. That is a lot of variation for under 50 bucks. Buy a set here.

I purchased this product at Target. They were OK for the first month. They clank and sometimes the extra weights stick to the dumbbell when you are trying to take it out of the base. After about a month of use, the end of one of the dumbbells broke and the stack of weights fell off of the end. One of the weight disks actually broke in half when it hit the carpet. I tried to exchange them at Target, but couldn't without a receipt. I called the manufactuer (Weider Care) and they could not issue me a replacement without a receipt. Of course I hadn't kept my receipt b/c I planned on keeping them and didn't anticipate them breaking!!!

Anyone still looking for these weights--they're on sale at Target this week (Jan 21) for $49.99. With tax, not much more than GNC but you don't have to wait for them to ship. GNC may still have free shipping over $50 though. I use adjustable Powerblocks for heavier weights but they're a bit too bulky for my stepper workouts and cardio DVDs. Very easy to use and great for a small apartment. The small plastic base they rest on takes up only 12x12 inches space. They replaced several pairs of mismatched, ugly dumbbells I got rid of when I moved. They look darn cute and will last a lifetime.

I was doing Christmas shopping today and these were 61 dollars at Target. I wish they would have been 40 and I would have bought them for my brother (and then used them later!)
