Many toothpaste makers also sell over-the-counter teeth whitening strips to help make your smile dazzle. If you have severe discoloration, these strips may not give you the results you're after. That's when professional teeth whitening may cross your mind, so here are some things you should know.
Your teeth are equipped with an enamel surface that's designed to protect your teeth from the effects of coffee, smoking, wine, and aging. Over the years though, your enamel begins to wear down so it becomes more transparent, and the yellowish color of dentin (your tooth's core) begins to show through. Also with time, tiny cracks form in the enamel that allows debris and stains to sink in, which adds to the dull, grayish color.
When you have your teeth professionally whitened, the stains and debris are removed but the cracks will still remain. That means eventually your teeth will need to be whitened again to get that same desired white smile. People choose this option instead of over-the-counter whitening products because dentists have access to high-concentration peroxide gel, so you can achieve better results in a shorter amount of time. The downside to professional whitening is that this stronger whitening formula can also cause extreme tooth sensitivity and gum irritation (which can last up to a month), not to mention it's much more expensive (around $650 per dentist visit). Depending on how stained your teeth are and how they respond to the gel, it may take several visits to acquire the whiteness you're after. Plus if you have crowns or porcelain veneers, the whitening won't affect them, so you could end up with what dentists call technicolor teeth (multi-colored teeth).
Fit's Tip: Experts say that teeth whitening is safe, as long as the products are approved by the American Dental Association (ADA). If you're considering professional teeth whitening, it's best to chat with your dentist about your options.

I noticed some stains apprearing about a month ago (usually I have crazy white teeth!) so i immidiatly took action and bought the before brushing whitening rinse and arm and hammer whitening toothpaste. I can really see a difference now!
1My husband got the UV whitening, and the sunblock the dentist applied didn't cut it. His lips and gums were so sunburned he could barely eat anything besides ice pops and ice cream for a week.
2stefanieo, that awful. cancer risk. a doctor should know better.
i find usual (a bit more xpensive) toothpaste effective, i get compliments about my smile constantly. but i do see that my parents are starting to show yellow smiles, so that's what awaits me. if i see my smile getting yellow, i brush my teeth three times a day for a 4-7 days and it's fine again.
3i've always wanted to get my teeth whitened, but i'm afraid of the sensitivity thing. i'm already anxious about that while i'm not going through the bleaching stuff that i'm sure i'll be even more nervous. i would really love to have a whiter smile though - so maybe it's worth it?
4I just got my teeth done today, it was the zoom whitening by my dentist, I have a couple sensitive spots already, but my mouth has hurt so bad all day! My teeth have been aching I hope this goes away. Im using orajel to numb the gums but its barely working.
5Yeah zoom is really good. They actually take a picture before they teeth whiten and after which is cool.
6Things like sensitivity and stuff like that can be helped. The reason your teeth are so sensitive after whitening because number 1) there using peroxide gel and a UV light on your teeth. Remember your teeth are vital they have a nerve so ofcourse there will be sensitivity, but 2) there are great preventive measures you can do to help this and achieve great results. 1) make sure you have a clean from your hgyienist to remove all stains and calculas built up from underneath and along the gumline. 2) start brushing your teeth with a sensitive tooth paste morning and night about two weeks before your whitening 3) "Tooth Mouse" or "Tooth Mouse PLUS"(contains flouride) its a GREAT product that recalsifies and remineralises your teeth. Tooth whitening dehydrates your teeth thats why your teeth appear so white after you whiten then it settles down and there not so white after a couple of weeks. Start using this and rub it all over your teeth before you go to bed. Dont rinse. It contains milk protiens so if your a lactose please dont use.
74) if it feels like you have burnt your gums or heat on the gums when you were having the whitening done Vitamin E oil! works a treat keep applying it atleast 4-6 times a day and it will prevent blistering, or black gums from where you have been burnt.
5) Because your teeth have been whitened and they're dehydrated that mean they are poures and like dry spounge. If you go and drink red wine or eat red lollies it will absorb that moisture straight away and stain your teeth worse than before. So simple avoid high colour foods until your whitening has settled down! Hope i've helped some of you
