The other morning I went to the grocery to pick up some eggs to hard boil so I could decorate them with my girls, and they were out of Pete and Gerry's Organic Eggs.
I freaked for half a second, but then noticed another brand right next to them. I picked up a 6-pack of Nellie's Nest Eggs and read the label.

thanks for trying to help us eat healthier and happier eggs, fitsugar! However, I'm still not that impressed. they aren't getting any natural sunlight and are still crowded. they aren't able to fulfill their natural instincts of scratching in the dirt or eating bugs. i know because i have chickens, and they BEG to be let out of their huge coop every morning so they can go investigate the latest bugs in the yard. to me, "cage free" chickens are just less maltreated than "caged" ones. i can't imagine the life of even these "cage free" hens. it's definitely one step in the right direction, but people can easily get eggs from chickens from local farms that have fields to run in. try your local farmer's market or eatwild.com for local resources.
1Thanks for the tip about local farms am. I agree with you completely - it supports local farms and it's better for the animals.
Unfortunately though, I'm not sure everyone has access to the neighborhood hens, so Nellie's is a better option than those huge factory farms.
2I LOVE Nellie's Nest Eggs. I was vegan for a while becasue I was so against the way animals are mistreated in huge factory farms. I had to start eating eggs for health reasons, and I feel better about eating eggs that come from farms that respect their animals.
I'm so glad you posted this because more people need to know about them.
