Get in Gear For National Walk @ Lunch Day

3

Trade your heels for some comfortable walking shoes and join others across the country for National Walk @ Lunch Day this Wednesday. For the last four years Blue Cross and Blue Shield have encouraged businesses to sponsor a "walking lunch" amongst its employees. The idea behind the event is to get people to become more active by taking a brisk walk at lunch every day, even if it's only for 10 minutes.

While I definitely have issues with the health insurance industry, this is an idea I can get behind — especially since so many people in our country lead sedentary lives. During my workday I always look for creative ways to get up and go, like making a stair date, exercising in small increments, or using wait time to go for a walk. My basic goal is to get moving however I can, which is exactly the message behind National Walk @ Lunch Day.

While my company doesn't have anything official happening to celebrate the event, I'll be making it a point to go on an even longer walk that day. In fact, this may be the excuse I need to try out a new lunch spot that's 10 blocks away. How about you?
