Shochu is a Japanese spirit comparable to vodka in taste, but it's much lower in calories. In most cocktails, a 1.5-ounce serving of hard liquor adds about 100 calories per drink; the same amount of shochu adds about 30 calories. Part of the reason shochu is so low in calories is due to its alcohol content, which averages around 55 proof. To compare, most vodkas are 80 proof.
American made Haamonii Shochu is usually the easiest to find in the States, and comes with the street cred of having earned a bunch of awards. Use it as a substitute for gin and vodka in your favorite cocktail recipes or try it in our Asian Bloody Mary.
