Landfills and Climate Change

I always believed I was recycling to save the trees. Which definitely helps our leafy friends, but I just learned another reason to recycle - methane.

Methane is a gas produced by landfills, where at least 50% of human garbage finds a resting place. Methane is also a major contributor to the green house gasses that are creating climate change. We all know that carbon dioxide from car emissions is a culprit in climate change, but how does it compare to the methane created by landfills?

My father makes fun of me daily for recycling, but today I was tired of it (and cranky, I admit), so I replied, "I'm sorry if I want my children to be able to enjoy the world and all of it's resources as you have allowed me to do!" I have tried to get them to recycle, but I have to help my parents along. I have fished over 47 newspapers and countless magazines out of the trash. If my boyfriend could, he would be composting at his apartment. I got many of my friends recycling and I hope I can have all of them be as knowledgeable about the environment!

My bit of advice-- in addition to recycling (also very important) is composting your food waste! It's the natural way for food to break down, return nutrients to the soil, etc. When food is chucked into the garbage, it will NEVER decompose in a landfill. Composting is super easy if you have a yard, and still easy if you don't (vermicomposting indoors). Check out the books Let It Rot and You Grow Girl to learn more. It's a very easy way to lower your impact on the earth.

I try really hard to promote recycling...yes, yes, I guess I am a tree hugger at heart but sometimes it's hard to get people to pitch in. I think we are so stuck in our old ways of throwing everything away....but every little bit helps!!!!!
