I'm a huge fan of Lärabars, but at $1.50 a pop, I can't afford my addiction. Plus each one is around 200 calories, which is slightly high when noshing on one for just a snack.
Check out these simple instructions on how to create your own dried fruit and nut bars. You'll not only save money, but since these bars are slightly smaller, they make the perfect 150-calorie snack or dessert. These bars are made with almonds, dates, and raisins, but you can get creative and experiment with different nuts and dried fruits. I can't tell you how addicted I am to these bars!

LikeI tried to make homemade bars a couple times and I couldn't seem to get them right, either. I just suck it up and pay for real larabars now...I figure $1/day is a fair enough price to make sure I'm eating dates and nuts for an afternoon snack instead of caving into my hunger and cravings at the candy machine!

Like@KeLynns, you could buy the ingredients in bulk, then just throw a mix into a bag for a snack. You'd still be eating the fruit and nuts, but it might be cheaper.

Like@SaraNoH This is going to sound so ridiculous, but dates and raisins make me feel like I'm eating old dried-up bugs. Something about the texture is super off-putting to me. I know this sounds ridiculous! But it makes it hard to make a trail mix that contains fruit.
But the taste doesn't bother me, which is why I'm OK with Larabars and similar stuff - that gross texture has been food processed away so I just get a chunk of date stuff instead of an actual oh-my-god-is-this-a-dead-cockroach date.
