Chances are, if you're reading FitSugar, you make an effort every day to eat right and exercise. Although you're doing your best to live a healthy lifestyle, maybe your significant other isn't. He or she may constantly snack on cookies and chips, drink soda instead of water, and get fast food every day for lunch. If it's upsetting to see them abusing their bodies, instead of watching their waistlines expand, here are some ways you can nudge them into taking better care of themselves.

deidre I defiantly see where you are coming from. My boyfriend gets lunch everyday at work, and its typically a big ol' cheesesteak packed with calories. Why do guys just not get it?

I hear you, snapperdoodle. ("Do you know how much sugar is in that chocolate milk???") I try to be wise about what kind of "pointers" I give.

My biggest struggle is with myself, not being a nag or acting like the food police! I want my hubby to be successful at losing weight, but I have to be selective about what I say to him. It just drives me crazy when he says he's trying to lose weight, and then I find out he's been eating fried chicken for lunch, and I have to be careful I don't go all "Jillian" on him!

I think the hard part is lunch -- hubs still insists that he get buy lunch everyday instead ("it's a social thing with my coworkers!"). Other than that, I pretty much dictate what he eats at home since I cook and shop for all the groceries. I'm excited to think of some sort of tit-for-tat deal with working out, per Yogaforlife's example. I'll be wanting to lose some baby weight this summer, and would love to get hubs in better shape with me!

wow - good post and topic. My husband thinks that because he is not overweight eating really well and a daily walk shouldn't be a daily habit. And this despite a very serious heart condition/surgery. I'm the one who's lost weight and tries very hard to maintain the loss and keep going with more. I work out at least 5 times a week. But nothing and I mean nothing will make him walk every day except him. He will eat whatever whenever without any thought to how much saturated fat or salt is in it. Even his heart doctor can't make him if he doesn't want to. DRIVES ME CRAZY! Yogaforlife: that's cool! Great idea!

@Yogaforlife, I like your deal but I don't think my hubby would go for it and it would be a Dodgers game. He knows he needs to lose weight but doesn't want to work at it. He eats the same dinner as me but then snacks all evening and who knows what he eats during the day.

Hubby and I are very competitive, in a friendly way of course. Our deal is whoever loses 10 lbs first gets 50 bucks to spend with no questions. It's easier to say no to a snack when your partner is offering it to you with a fake evil laugh. I know it's kind of weird, but it's how our relationship works.

I tried to get him to let me knit/read while he watches sports, but since I already do that, he said I wouldn't really be giving anything up.

I really really needed this advice. My boo and I are in totally different places right now health wise. I'm changing my lifestyle to be healthy. I eat right, I exercise. He won't and he's a bad influence on me when we hang out, which is every weekend, for the whole weekend. :(

Yogaforlife! Ha - this sounds like me and my hubby. I'm always trying to get him to go running or walking with me outside, and this could be a great compromise. Although I'll still knit or read while he watches sports on TV.

My husband and I just made a deal last night. If he goes running with me at least once a week, I will sit and watch a Red Sox baseball game with him once a week - without a book to read or knitting something. Hopefully that makes him learn to love running.
