When you're brand-new to working out, the gym be an intimidating place. First and foremost, being hard on yourself for being a beginner is not doing you any good — it's important to remember that everyone was new at one point! With that said, there are a few ways to make your time at the gym feel more supportive (and productive) from the start. Take these tips to heart for that extra bit of confidence you're looking for. After just a few weeks of a consistent workout schedule, you'll be surprised how soon the gym feels like your second home.

Go In With a Plan

When you head to work out and you're not sure what you're going to do, it's easy to get overwhelmed and caught up in the scene. Before you ever step through the front doors, come equipped with a plan! Whether it's a printable workout or a new group fitness class, coming prepped can alleviate your anxiety. When you know what's on your workout agenda for the day, it keeps you engaged and less susceptible to outside distraction.

Ask Questions

Signing up for a few sessions with a trainer is an investment worth making if you've never worked out in the gym before. However, if your budget doesn't allow for a series of sessions, it doesn't mean that trainers are off-limits. If you have questions about proper form or the exercises you should do with a piece of equipment, there's no harm in asking for a quick tip. As long as they're not busy with a client, the vast majority of the time your gym's trainers will be more than happy to offer some pointers. Show Up in Quality Gear

Whenever I show up to the gym wearing ill-fitting workout clothes, I'm always more self-conscious than those days when I'm rocking my favorite workout clothes.
