Good question, Jessica. Ending a relationship is never easy, even one that is strictly professional. First ask yourself what's not working with your current trainer — we suggest making a list. You might find that simply talking to your current trainer about your concerns will be enough to fix the problem. Give him or her a session or two to make the changes you are requesting. Often trainers have no idea that you might not be getting the most out of your sessions. Ultimately they want to make sure you're happy, which means they're willing to adjust things to better suit your needs.

Now if your trainer doesn't shape up or you're just not clicking in the right way, it's time to call things off. While no one wants to be the bearer of bad news, this is a professional service that you're paying for. And if you are working with a true professional, your trainer will understand if you want to find someone that better suits your needs. "At the end of the day, we're paid to do a service and we know that it's not personal if you want to see someone new," says Shaun Gregg, a personal trainer at the University of California, San Francisco. "Ultimately your sessions should be fun, but also show results. If it's not working out, the best thing you can do is move on."
Shaun told us that you don't need to go into great detail when you're ending the trainer-client relationship, but a little constructive criticism can go a long way. Let your trainer know a few reasons why you are leaving but also highlight the positive, says Shaun. And depending on the length of the relationship, Shaun also says it's more than OK to break up with a trainer over email or with a phone call. However, if your trainer was truly unprofessional (or unsafe), speak to his or her manager and let them handle the finer points.
