Have You Ever Lied to Your Doctor?

I am wondering if you're guilty of lying to your doc? It happens, consciously or unconsciously. I just want to do an informal and unscientific poll of my own to see how common these lies really are, and which ones we tell the most. So if you have ever lied to your physician tell me which lie below.

my doctor is a very nice person but also a very religious person. i get concerned that he is judging me because of his beliefs. i only tell him things that i think he needs to know. that's all. i never lie to my dentist or optometrist...

I'm in an open relationship, so I lie about that sometimes. Some people get really judgy so I just avoid the topic, or I blush furiously and cross my fingers that my doc doesn't care.

Also, if you are honset about when a condition started, and it was before your insurance coverage started, your claim will most likely be denied as a pre-existing condition (had that happen to my best friend). So there ARE reasons to lie... our wonderful insurance system.

I lie because some doctors are really judgemental. There was this gynae I met who even told me to get married and I should avoid pre-marital sex.

i don't care if they judge me if i tell them something they may not like. i think doctors are there to listen to the truth so they can make right decision how to treat us. but i have lied that i need the pill for protection against pregnancy, but it really was so that i have less painful periods and better skin.

Oh good one Spectra, i lie about how much caffeine i drink too. I also say maybe 2 cups or so...but it's probably closer to 4ish.

The few times I have lied to my doctor I regret it. Like, why did I do that? SO pointless.

i don't understand why people lie in life at all. it's pointless! i do have a problem at the dr though. when i tell them about my lifestyle they ask me over & over b/c they can't believe i'm NOT lying. then, they start explaining the questions in case i didn't actually understand it. guess what! some people have self control!

I don't lie about any of those things, but I do try to shave a bit off of how much caffeine I drink. I know I probably drink something like 4-6 caffeinated beverages a day but I always tell my doctor that I drink only around 2 or 3.

One reason to lie is that information is disclosed to insurance companies and can be used against you later on. My dear boyfriend was a little bit of a drinker in college...so much so that he gave himself an ulcer. He was honest with the doctor about how much he drank in hopes of getting the right treatment(it was a shocking amount...gotta love Big Ten binge drinking), and when he applied for a life insurance policy through his sister three years later he was denied and referred to AA! He didn't (and doesn't) need AA...he just needed to graduate. But that will follow him on his medical history for years to come. Being honest can, unfortuantely, bite you in the ass.

I lie to my dermo about how often I tan and how much sunscreen I wear. Its bad, i am a blue eyed blonde and thus at a higher risk. And we all know I am at risk so it wont change what actions she takes with me. But I just dont want to hear the lecture every time. So I fib. Just a little. I have never lied about anything else - "sex, drugs and rock roll" details I freely share.

I'm sure I have before but I can't think of anything specific. I don't now, mt dr's are pretty cool so I'm ok with telling them everything

I've never lied to my doctor. I trust her and I think that's really important.

For some reason I feel comfortable talking to my doctor and know that being honest with someone who's trying to help me stay healthy, is a good practice.
