I hate when I have stomach issues, and having food poisoning has got to be the worst. It stinks that something you ate, whether it was out to dinner, at a friend's house, or in your own kitchen, could make you have to run to the bathroom every five minutes (or never leave for hours). Sometimes knowing others have felt your pain can make you feel better, so tell me . . .

ended up in the hospital twice from food poisoning. once for 4 days and once just overnight. my husband spent 5 days once in the hospital from food poisoning. he got it from a seafood salad bar. i never knew where mine came from. last time i thought i had food poisoning it turned out to be appendicitis. symptoms were almost the same. either way, not fun.
Yep, last summer I got it from a bad Arby's roast beef sandwich. That night I was up all night puking and having to literally change my pants everytime I puked. I tried taking phenegren, but I just kept throwing it up and it made me sleep the whole next day. It was the worst experience of my life. I am now extremely paranoid about eating and I worry about it constantly. It sucks, but whatever.
My boyfriend and I got it this weekend from eating the shrimp caprese at Olive Garden! I have never felt that bad my entire life and that includes having back labor with my daughter! He and I were in that bathroom all night and day and it wasn't pretty, plus we had our 15month old to try to take care of in between. I will never be able to eat Olive Garden again...and as of now nothing sounds good. I did lose 6 pounds though. Wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy it was that bad!

Yep, had it in college. Think it was my veggie taco that had some cross-contamination. My roommate was out for the night (saving me some embarassment), so I spent all night in the bathroom (some of it just laying on the floor) talking to the on-call nurse from the health center. I thought I would never feel better...

I got food poisoning from the very lovely restaurant meal we had on New Years - lots of seafood I'm guessing it might have been the oysters. Me and my friend both felt fine on the 1st but the next morning we both started feeling really crappy and thought that it was from the chicken we cooked for us two - when 6 other people from the New Years party got sick we were at least greatful that its not due to us being unhygienic. Its quite the joke actually I made it through Asia and Egypt without any problems and now fell sick in Italy :-(The only other time I had it was when a male friend at university cooked for me and his mother apparently had never told him that minced meat goes bad really fast.

I got it from a salad bar. It was coming out of both ends for a couple of days! Needless to say, the place I got it from went out of business, and I do not go to salad bars anymore!

I had it for my BIRTHDAY last year. Pretty sure I picked it up at the community college where I'd been taking a class. Bad things coming out of both ends. Was really glad that the bathtub was right next to the toilet. Lost about ten pounds, partly from dehydration and partly because I was afraid to eat ANYTHING for weeks after I started feeling better.

I had salmonella 5 years ago, because of a bad chicken burger. I remember myself crawling and shaking in pain on my couch, feeling my stomach and my gastric tube like it was going to blow, I was sick as a dog, all you do is throwing up and you know what. The doctor said that behind his desk he could hear the noise of my stomach!

I had a terrible evening of it after I ate a bunch of fruit samples from the farmer's market. Explosions of all sorts (ahem) and I was so sweaty and hot that I ran out of the house and set off my father's home alarm in the middle of the night...oops. I still love going to the weekly market, but I'll be damned if I'm going to eat anything from those sample bowls. I'll wash and cut it myself when I get home...thoroughly!!

I get food poisoning very easily so it made be a little obsessed about cleanliness in the kitchen and fresh products. I try not to eat out and mostly eat food that I've cooked myself. My poor mom, whenever I come over her house and she's cooking I watch over her shoulder to make sure all products are clean and fresh. It's a bit too much, I know, but I have had some very bad experiences and too many of them. The worst one though - and E. Coli infection when I was a kid. I was in a hospital for about 2-3 weeks and when I was discharged I couldn't even eat normal foods for a while. So be careful of what you eat and how it's prepared because much of this can be avoided :)

I have had food poisoning (botulism) no less than 5 times. The first time I recall getting botulism was from something my dad served for dinner. My brother, my dad and I ate my dad's rotten meal and within hours we were all puking etc. My sister eventually took us all to the hospital for treatment. I was 13 at the time. The next time is was just me who got it. I was so sick so fast that my dad called an ambulance. IV fluids,and hours of treatment and I started to feel just miserable rather than near death. When I first moved to SF I ate at this restaurant 'Golden Era' which is around the corner from my apartment. Again within an hour I wasn't feeling well. Within three hours I was in an ambulance on my way to General Hospital. I had to speak with the SF Health Dept and they went to my apartment and collected my leftovers from the restaurant. Yup salmonella from the food. I spent a few days in the hospital getting IV fluids, electrolytes, potassium and everything they could throw at me to try to stop system failures. Fun, not. The last time was accidentally self-induced. I was driving the 24-Divisadero bus all day. I had packed my lunch myself and had bought fresh cantaloupe which I had cut into cubes and put in a glad lock container. I set my lunchbox on the dashboard while I worked for 10 hours straight. The day was a scorcher - at least 90 in August of 2006. While my bus broke down so I found got a chance to eat my lunch. I ate my pb&j then I decided to just eat the melon. Bad idea. I hadn't washed the rind of the melon before I cut it and it was infested with salmonella among other things. I ate all of the refreshing melon. So finally the tow truck came and fixed my bus and I got to go home after 11 hours at work. I was home about two hours before I started vomiting violently. Then I had diarrhea. Then I started having convulsions. I called my doctor and she called an ambulance. Off to CPMC medical center where they swabbed things and again IV fluids, drugs, meds to stop me from vomiting so violently. I was throwing up blood by this time. After several hours the ER doctor said food poisoning. I stayed in the ER overnight with a high fever and vomiting and the rest - I guess they were short on beds due to the mini-heatwave. I apparently kept telling the nurses that I had to report for work at MUNI by 7am. I kept saying "I've gotta go to work." They of course wouldn't let me so they found my MUNI ID and looked in my address book and called my division and tried to tell them I was in the hospital with severe food poisoning. The bastards at work refused to accept the word of the RN, then of the ER doctor treating me, so they put me on the phone where I had the most incoherent rambling convo with my supervisor. Finally the doctor said enough and said "she won't be in today or for the rest of the work cause you're a dick. You got a problem call the Chief of Staff at CPMC." And he hung up. 48 hours later they released me and I went home and stayed there until my supervisor called to yell at me for missing my shifts. SO I dragged myself out of bed and over to my division with the note from the doctors. The supervisor saw me and told me to go home and said "You cannot have other people call in on your behalf. Even if your unconscious." Huh? "The city just won't accept that sort of thing." Then the supervisor says, "So you're going to drive tonight?" At which point I passed out right there in the office. Back to the hospital, this time General. Finally, the supervisor accepted that I was sick and gave me the time off from MUNI. Not only did I have botulism but I had heat stroke that hadn't been recognized because they were so concerned about the botulism. That was the last time I had food poisoning - I wash everything I eat, I rarely eat out and I usually do not eat food prepared by people that might be unhygienic. The thing that I want to really say is if you think or know that you got food poisoning from a restaurant - you should (I would say Must but) call the Health Department for the city where you live and report it. It could be the difference between life or death for the next patron.

I've had it more often in recent years...I think last year I had it about 4 times [yikes]! 1. This one Chili's all my friends went to...if you didn't order things that were fried or otherwise fatty, they could never cook it right. I got sick from badly cooked broccoli once, and then from grilled chicken in a fajita order. 2. Went to a wedding, ALL of the salad was tainted...pretty much everyone [priests and nuns, the bride] who had salad ended up sick for a week or in the ER. It even made the news! 3. Some lettuce that was slightly bad [even though it was in date, stored properly and didn't look bad]. As you can imagine, I'm VERY wary of pretty much any food I buy or eat now. it kind of sucks that I have to be really picky about stuff, but it's either that or dizziness over the toilet or going to the ER @_@
