There always seems to be speculation about how a certain celebrity has shed pounds, and the most recent target of the weight-loss rumorville is Lindsay Lohan. The starlet is no stranger to media commentary regarding her body, and the most recent accusation is that LL is on a mostly liquid diet that includes drinking three Red Bulls a day.
There are plenty of reasons for refraining from liquid diets, principally the fact that they can be dangerous due to their tendency to leave a dieter undernourished. I sort liquid diets in with other fad diets that aren't sustainable for long-term weight loss, but many of us are guilty of trying some pretty ridiculous and unhealthy diets in the name of slimming down. Does a liquid diet make your list of abandoned weight loss techniques?

Erickson Beamon
Nope, I don't really see that it's necessary. There are so many other ways to lose weight in a healthy and sustainable way.
1agree Diamond, LL looks sickly and healthy food is yummy, why would anyone give it up. Exercize and eat right!!
2Aren’t Red Bulls mostly sugar? Any diet that expressly includes those is not a diet I want to be on.
The only time I’ve done anything close to a liquid diet was for a few days before a colonoscopy and for about a week in college when I tried Slim-Fast. I was starving both times! Not my thing.
3Only for medical reasons like major surgery. Never because I wanted to.
Oh wait, there was this one time when I was staying in rural germany and I refused to drink their milk (Not pasteurized and the fact that I saw the cows kind of freaked me out a bit) I lived off of expresso, tea, and sugar for a good 2 days before giving in. Never again.
4Nope.
5No, because I don't have the willpower and the desire. I know people who used to go on unofficial liquid diets ... like the wine only diet. No exercise. Tons of weight lost. I was a little envious b/c 1) the results and 2) I can't tolerate alcohol! To be serious, though, my body and mind are not suited for extreme regimens. And I used to wonder what the heck was happening to the interal organs of these people. Yikes.
6I only said yes because i HAD TO prior to a few medical procedures (when i was 16-18 I had to go in for every test imaginable for intesines/stomach/colon/etc...blah...)
i would never do it on my own will... ever. that can't be healthy...
7I would never do it on purpose, but sometimes you need to do a liquid-only diet before surgeries or a colonoscopy. It always just seemed like such a scam to me. Of course you're going to lose weight if you don't eat solids: food has weight to it, plus you'll shed water weight and probably lose a bit of muscle as well. I'm pretty sure something like that can't be good for your metabolism.
8no, but i have friends who tried the herbal life diet
9No. Save for surgery and religious reasons ... the body needs fat, calories, protein, and carbs to function, and perfers it in solid whole food form.
10yep...sure have. at one point i lost 12 pounds in 5 days. gained it back in 3..when i started eating. and i wasn't pigging out either...
11i've done it and although i don't recommend it - you do see quick results. the downside of course is that you'll gain it all back right away too.
12I am currently on one through my doctor. I don't recommend doing so without being monitored by a medical professional because problems can arise, from liver function, to muscle mass loss, etc. It's working for me, but like I said, don't do it unless you have a qualified professional looking after your health as you lose the weight.
13are cocaine and meth considered liquids these days?
14noo.. i love food! liquid diet = crazy
15no thank you
16I did that " 48hr Hollywood Juice Fast" thing that was popular a few years back at the start of my eating disorder.
Liquid fasting is dumb, unless its for religious reasons there is no reason to do it, the body doesn't need "cleansing" we have organs for that. And it won't make you lose fat weight (The only weight loss that matters). It'll just make most people cranky and hungry and will often lead to a binge.
(note the other exception might be an obese person doing one to save their life under the care of a medical doctor, not from a spa either, a real live hospital people!)
17Oh heeell no. Call me old fashioned but I like to chew my food.
18Juices have a lot of calories though, it seems counter- intuitive. Unless they're just drinking water all day. I love the green superfood juice and power-c ones, there's no way people can lose weight drinking those!
19in high school, i would do liquid fasts every monday.
20unless you need to do one for some medical reason, liquid diets are about the stupidest things you could do to your body - besides completely starving it down by not eating anything at all.
21I should add that you CAN be on a safe liquid diet...I had a coworker who had severe TMJ and she really couldn't chew her food. She had these special shakes that she had to drink and they had plenty of calories in them...I don't think she lost much weight on the program, but she did say that she missed the action of chewing and enjoying her food.
22NOPE. One of my coworkers did that master cleanse thing - the lemon, cyanne (this is probably misspelled but I don't have time to look it up) pepper, maple syrup water diet and she lost a ton of weight, but she'd gain it right back as soon as she was off the diet, so she kept going back on! Finally, she fainted while doing an eye pre-exam. The patient was totally freaked out and my coworker was ORDERED to eat regular meals from then on.
23I had to for medical reasons a few times. I'd never do it of my own free will. I freak out enough for the 12-14 hour fasts before blood tests.
Diseases of the digestive system are NOT fun.
24I had to only eat mushy foods for a week due to my wisdom teeth and OMG I am so ready to eat solid foods. There is something so gratifying about eating solid foods, chewing, digesting, etc.
25I had to when I had jaw surgery. 3 months of thin liquid while my mouth was wired shut. I ended up at 97 pounds and I'm 5'10"- my husband called me Skeletor.
I wouldn't do it again for anything.
26Yes I have been on a liquid diet as prescribed and monitiored by a Physician. I was on a protein sparing liquid fast for one year. Absolutely no solid food - just these shakes, fruit drinks, milk and soups from the doctors office plus liquid potassium and weekly health checks including weekly EKGs and blood panel tests and quarterly Echocardiograms to watch for destruction to my heart.
I lost 90 pounds though I couldn't drop below 200 lbs. Ultimately a year after the liquid diet I gained 120 lbs back and kept gaining until I decided to stop everything.
27I was on a liquid diet while in the hospital for gastrointestinal problems about two years ago, and when that was over, I vowed to myself that I'd NEVER do it again. It's misery!
28good luck to you wackdoodle: hope you're doing OK.
29No, but I'm not very big on dieting
30No, but I'm not a moron so I tend to refrain from doing stupid things -- this is of course referring to liquid diets to lose weight, not liquid diets because you can't eat solid foods!
Having 3 Red Bulls a day is dangerous (seriously). Does Lohan ever make any good decisions??
31I had gastric bypass surgery (primarily for maintenance & to avoid some weight related familial issues) almost three years ago Zulkey.
I lost 170lbs from the surgery and 60 pre-op - I've only gain back 25 lbs from medication so I'm doing excellently.
Thanx for the well wishes Zulkey!
32I did the master cleanse, so yes, I guess I have. I loved it though and can't wait to do it again.
33I don't recommend liquid diets for weight-loss when what your chugging is diet coke and red bull.
HOWEVER juicing or blending things as a detox regimen etc is the best ever. Sometimes weight loss is a side effect, and you will not gain it all back after if you know how to PROPERLY transition back into regular foods.
Liquid give your digestion a huge break which allows it to tend and heal to other parts of your body. There is lots of literature on this subject, so I'll refrain from getting into it. But if it peeks your interest it's really worth getting into.
In case anyone is wondering what these juices or blended "smoothie" diets would be made of... fresh fruits, veg, grasses, superfoods, young coconut water.
If you want to google things in relation to this seach juice fasting or juice feasting.
34Yes, and I lost almost 70 pounds in three months. I drank slim fasts, water and protein shakes. I also took a multivitamin. I'm currently on it again to lose more weight. I love liquid diets!
35I've been on a liquid diet but not by choice. When I got my braces on about a year a & a half ago. My teeth were so sore I was unable to eat solid food. Needless to say I dropped about 10 lbs. I just had my braces adjusted yesterday and once again I'm on this diet. Best part is I don't gain the weight back...YAY!
36My church is doing the Diniel Fast and it's for 21 days. The first 7 days you can only have water, Natural Liquids from fruits or veggies only. Day 8-21 Natural Liquids from 7am - 7pm. After 7pm you can have all the fruit and veggies you want no meats at all and nothing fried. It's not for weight lost but I pray I drop a few pounds.
37noooo, never
