As someone who is known for doing detox diets a few times a year, Gwyneth Paltrow is in cleansing mode yet again. She's previously completed the Master Cleanse and other liquid-detox diets and described the three-week detox she's finishing in her most recent GOOP newsletter.
While Gwyneth writes, "This program allowed me to work and exercise regularly, something I cannot do if I am on a liquid-only detox," two of her three daily meals in this diet were liquid-only. See what her cleanse contained this time around when you read more.
Gwyneth followed The Cleanse Program, designed by cardiologist and detoxification specialist Dr. Alejandro Junger. According to the doctor, "the detox eases digestion by providing two liquid meals a day and a solid one in between, eliminating allergenic and mucus-forming food." Dr. Junger recommends eating organic foods while avoiding processed ones and "making time for detox-enhancing habits like sauna and massage."
I'm all for fueling your body with natural food instead of processed stuff, but you'll never see me adopting a diet that allows only one solid meal a day — even if it did "work wonders" for Gwyneth. My body and brain need more fuel to provide enough energy required for my active lifestyle.

See, this is more typical Gwyneth behavior. She doesn't eat; she subsists on liquid diets that give her just enough nourishment to walk around and go to her Tracy Anderson arm-flailing sessions. Good thing she never lifts anything over 3 lbs...she might pass out if she tries to lift any more than that.
1PLEASE stop posting about Gwyneth Paltrow's detox "diets" on fit sugar -- NOTHING about this practice is fit at all. its starvation.
2There are actually a lot of medical doctors (eg Fuhrman of eat to live) who will argue that detoxing can be very good for your health (usually specific issues). That being said, they usually recommend no food, no work, no exercise and being monitored by a doctor (and it usually does not result in much weight loss since you gain it back pretty quickly).
Let's face it, Gwennie goes on a detox "diet" every couple months for 3 full weeks - its just her way of cutting half her calories for the day without people claiming she has an ED. I agree with Spectra - no wonder Tracy Anderson's clients only lift 3lbs, they aren't properly fueled.
3Amen, mamasitamali. I unsubscribed from GOOP after the January detox letter came out. It made me realize that GOOP really succeeded in making me feel inadequate - always talking about the best way to be skinny and the best mail order foie gras and the best cashmere comforter for your bed and which Greek island to visit on vacation, etc., etc. There was nothing positive about it at all.
4Good point Spectra, she obviously wont have the nergy subsiting on 1 solid meal a day to do a real workout.
There may be doctors who say detox diet works, but the overwhelming majority of doctors and trainers say it is bs. The body naturally detoxes itself and starving yourself by consuming a negligible amount of calories is harmful for your body and makes your metabolism go haywire. I need to have energy in my life and energy comes from proper nutrition.
5I don't agree with detox and liquid diets at all nor would I do one but one good thing the diet recommends is eliminating "allergy" foods. My husband suffered from IBS for many years until he tried a modified detox diet. He then found out that he has celiac disease. If it had not been for the elimination part of some detox diets he would still be suffering today.
6She is crazy, most people can not afford walking all day like zombies bc we have jobs and many other responsibilities. she probably doesnt even have to lift her kids, bc nannies are doing that for her. I hate her
7I'm in med school, and all I know is that 'detoxing' is what the kidneys and liver do, by filtering and enzymatically processing digested food into macromolecules and then into better-absorbed molecules etc. The body is extremely efficient at doing this and a liquid detox diet will do nothing except limit calories and nutrients that the body needs, which would lead to expected weight loss.
The 'energized, pure' feeling she often refers to is the mental effect of the so-called exhilaration that dieters seem to feel by not eating and seeing results.
There are no proven medical benefits to 'detoxing', unless it would be less drastic (i.e. substituting 2 solid meals with liquid meals) or accompanied by a healthy lifestyle, and if the patient is obese (morbidly or significantly).
8she claims this made her lose some weight she had gained. perhaps she had been lifting some heavier weights and gained some muscle? gasp!
i agree with everyone here, this is a veiled eating disorder and it's disgusting. food is fuel, not the enemy!
9Gwyneth is insane and probably suffers from disordered eating with all the craziness she does to herself (admittedly takes one to know one). At the very least she is obsessed with "health" and adopts some crazy, unhealthy practices. Please stop posting about these destructive habits, she's just another crazy star with too much influence over people.
10Nothing about detoxing is healthy, it's masked starvation and ED behavior and does not fit the "fit sugar" philosophy.
... she's still full of... GOOP. actually, that's why she probably has such an easy time NOT eating.. it's her very own BS that fuels her, no need for food.
11also, as a former anorexia patient, i learned that when people are restricting their fat to extremes for prolonged periods of time, the chemicals in the brain shift into "fight or flight" mode. NO i'm NOT saying she's anorexic, but all these detox "highs" she's getting are probably more due to THAT than her organs new found state enlightenment.
12I have to agree with the posters above -- she's basically engaging in disordered eating patterns, calling it a detox and FitSugar, a site ostensibly devoted to health, is playing along. PLEASE stop featuring this nonsense, it is completely irresponsible. If a starlet started talking about her laxative detox, I hope you would not legitimize it to your readers.
13I agree -- this is nutty.
If one is fit and healthy, there are no "toxins" in one's body. The notion of detoxing is absurd.
14Who is this Gwyneth character and why does she think we care??
15I whole heartedly agree with what everyone is saying here! The only "detox" that I'll do is eating 100% clean when I start to feel really bogged down and have been making some unhealthy eating choices. I still eat real food for all meals and snacks though
16I completely agree that detoxing is unhealthy. I also don't understand why she tries to sell such a controversial and unhealthy behavior on GOOP.
Regardless, I think the comments on this post are a bit obnoxious. Some of you are saying she probably has an ED in which case, I don't understand why you are making fun of it. On a woman's health blog, I just don't understand how that's humorous.
All of the comments mocking Gywenth disappoint me. They seem like they would belong on a gossip blog and not on fitsugar. Why don't we focus on the positive things?
17It is Gwyneth's choice to speak out on detox because she clearly believes in the benefits of detoxification and cleanses in general. There is much truth to the process, especially in the current day when food has become more and more processed, and harder on the body to digest. Please shoot us an e-mail with questions to learn more about the process. We are here to help.
18To whomever wrote the last comment- show us the clinical or scientific data to support the claims made as to the benefits of detoxing, and I'll believe it. I don't understand how practicing physicians can knowingly go against principles of evidence-based medicine!
Oh, that's right ... when it comes to making money, some physicians will go to great lengths to support the latest 'fad diet'. Especially with a high-profile celebrity backing them up!
19See, I have been on a detox diet a few times, but not like her. They are recommended in my culture and are usually religious in nature. But they are not to lose weight! And are only one day long. And only done once or at the most twice a year!
20How can you possibly retain your health and energy doing this for 3 weeks every 2 months?!
She seems sort of crazy about detox diets...I guess it must work for her? I would never do one.
21alenka, I do'nt think anyone is making fun of EDs, her possibly having one, or anyone having one. a true ED sufferer is sick and need help and support. what we're saying is that someone who supports and participates in unhealthy behavior should not be featured on a womens health and fitness site, nor should she be given kudos for her "healthy" lifestyle choices
22She's so rail thin that I hope she doesn't do this to lose more weight! IMO, she just seems to be super skinny with minimal muscle, which is not the equivalent of healthy and fit!
23How about the celebrity fitness follows celebs who are more like the rest of us and are POSITIVE role models! I'd like to read about someone who's not setting an impossible standard of thin and has a healthy perspective on fitness, health and food!
24Shut the F up, Gwyneth! Ugh. If you read her full quote you see that she mentioned the reason she's on this detox is because she came off a period of relaxing and enjoying herself. I feel like sweet Gwynnie clearly gets off on being an uptight control freak. but moreover, if you must stop eating foods to lose weight, I think you should just get used to having the weight you have. And also, 'cleasing' your system is so bogus it makes me want to scream. How did we as a species survive this long without cleaning out our intestines? Must have been a fluke.
25Wasn't it just this week that fitsugar quoted her as saying she loves food and doesn't do diets? Haha.
26The issue I have with detoxes is that it seems you gain the weight back immediately after you go off it because your body is in starvation mode. Right?
27Detoxing is one thing. What Gwyneth does is NOT detoxing, that's 3 week starvation programme!
28I know a lot of people are interested in these cleanses, but to me it just seems like a fast fix to a life time long pile of problems.
Why not just clean up your diet? That way you can get the satisfaction of doing something "good for you" everyday....three to five times a day in fact.
also, I can't even imagine the, ahem, toilet habits of someone on a liquid fast... not worth it!
29Did you know that Gwyneth is almost 37 years old? Check out her amazing skin, shiny hair, and toned bod. That woman is doing something right. I know such an intense detox thing isn't for me but I do love the idea of eliminating what might be harmful and adding the nutrients I might be missing. Also, I'm sure she has access to nutritionists who make sure she gets everything she needs. Most people probably don't have a nutritionist, so it is especially important that people on any kind of restrictive diet monitor their caloric and nutritional intakes.
30She's really working hard on her self !
31Her shiny hair is dyed and her skin is haggard and wrinkled from years of smoking. She's disgusting.
32I love how she claims she did the detox diet because she went through a "period" of eating and enjoying her life. That is so sad that eating and enjoying her life can only be done in phases, and then she must immediately punish her body for it. Please stop posting about her on fitsugar immediately.
