I'm sure you've heard the bad news. Polycarbonate water bottles that contain the chemical Bisphenol A, like the ever popular ones made by Nalgene, are probably bad for you. Studies show that hard, clear plastics might possibly cause cancerous tumors, urinary tract problems, and early puberty. With news like that, you're probably in the market for a new, safer water bottle. Enter Klean Kanteen!
This Klean Kanteen water bottle ($16.95) is made of stainless steel (SIGG bottles are made of aluminum). It holds 27 ounces of water, is toxin free and can be cleaned in the dishwasher, which I love. The mouth of the bottle is wide enough to handle ice cubs, and the polypropylene screw cap is easy to grip and seals tight to prevent leakage. The bottle is skinny so I can slip it into my backpack easily or in the cage on my bike. If you are super outdoorsy, you can use a spare carabiner to attach the bottle to the outside of your backpack with the handy loop on the bottle lid. These are a little cheaper than SIGG bottles (a 20-oz. bottle is about $20), so if you're trying to save some dough, I'd definitely pick one of these up. You can buy one here.

I prefer stainless over aluminum.
1I have sippy cups by them for my kids!
2I have one from the OGGI corporation, I ues it for the gym. I Read about the plastic when my kid where babies. This same plastic is used for baby bottles also.
3My husband and I both have Kleen Kanteen's, and we love 'em! The water definitely tastes better, and I definitely prefer stainless steel over aluminum.
4Not a bad idea if you're concerned about BPA. I usually drink water out of either a glass or I'll fill my Nalgene bottle with water and drink that. BPA only leeches into water in your bottle if you heat it up very hot or freeze it with the water in it. Just keep the Nalgene bottles out of the dishwasher and the freezer, use mild detergent and if it cracks for some reason, throw it out.
It's kind of funny that the whole Nalgene bottle craze is coming to an end. It all started with lab techs taking the Nalgene lab ware to use for their own personal use. Then Nalgene took off with creating a personal water-bottle line using polycarbonate. Craziness.
5I'm with Spectra. I'll keep my nalgene and just keep it away from extreme temps and throw it out if it cracks.
6We have some eddie bauer stainless steel water bottles that were a Christmas gift for our hiking expeditions - unfortunately they don't hold enough water for hiking. But I can certainly use one for the gym.
Also for those who are Nalgene fans - they now have a Stainless Steel cup.
7I bought on in January. LOVE IT! I don't use plastic water bottles anymore. I feel like I'm doing something good for my myself and the earth.
8I love them. They aren't as pretty as SIGG bottles, but you can put stickers on it or something.
9There are a lot of plastic bottles now that don't have phthalates or BPA in them, including some of the Nalgene and Camelback bottles. The most popular Nalgene shape does, but the similar bottles by Camelback don't. I prefer a sport cap (something I can drink from easily when I'm in the car) and I've heard the SIGG and Kleen Kanteen caps are hard to drink from. Anyone tried the sports tops on these bottles?
10I need one of these for the gym.
11These things are great. I got a few variations. I particularly like the loopy cap thing - I can tie it on when I am rock climbing! FYI I got mine at Http://www.877myjuicer.com - it was a few bucks cheaper than buying direct from the klean kanteen site. Also picked up a few other cool green-crazy stuff. Im a raw food eater...I found my little slice of heaven on the net! haha...spent too much money though..lol
12Before you purchase your Klean Kanteen please read about my experience. It may save you money and time! I ordered online and after I received no response I got worried that I had run into some online scam. I had selected a red tote for my Kanteen but the red ones were not available and yet their website let me order it anyway without saying “not available” or “on backorder.” It seems that Klean Kanteen is a fly by the seat of your pants operation. So, it took a call from me to find out, first, if they had actually received my order and, secondly, when they were going to send it. They told me over the phone it could be “awhile” for the red tote (god only knows how long that is!) so instead of waiting “awhile” I selected a blue tote. Well, the package arrived and I opened it up to find a receipt that listed the Total $42.98 (I bought the 27 oz. bottle, an extra stainless cap, a sling, and a tote, plus shipping) but I recalled being charged $47.62. As you can guess, I promptly phoned them up only to get voicemail, voicemail, voicemail. At this point I had figured out that I am not dealing with an online scam but rather a very unprofessional business! Their classic excuse has become “we’re very busy!” Heck, who isn’t? My time is worth something too! A business having growing pains should not use that as an excuse but as an opportunity to improve their business, these people want none of that! So finally they look up the disparity in price, and you’ll LOVE this, the same size totes are priced differently! If you still think you want to deal with this hokey operation please know that the RED tote ordered online costs $9.99, but the BLUE tote ordered over the phone costs $5.35. I have the receipt to prove it (they still charged me the $9.99 price) and ANYONE who wants to see the receipt please email me at bellasmum bigfoot com. The most important part of this whole diatribe of mine is that at first when Klean Kanteen thought I had been overcharged they blamed it on Paypal!!! Remember that I went onto THEIR website to order THEIR product and yet THEIR responsibility ends there even though I just gave THEM (so I thought) access to MY checking account! Folks this is scary! No ordering online for me anymore. I just wanted to try this brand out because of the shape and if I liked them, send them as gifts to my family throughout the year on their birthdays. That is no longer an option for me as I detest doing business with people like this and I am fearful of their pricing scheme!!!! I have a SIGG bottle and it is fantastic, wish it were thinner but truly it is a good product that I recall being simple and painless to order. Functional negatives are: Klean Kanteen does taste slightly metallic and the SIGG opening is smaller. If you really need the Kanteen, I suggest going to a local store to be sure of the actual service and product. But chances are, where ever there is a Kanteen there is usually a SIGG, or you can find them at www.mysigg.com You DO have a vote in demanding proper service and that vote is YOUR dollar!
13Comment 5 is extremely misleading and pretty false. BPA leaches out of plastic simply if it's used, not just when it's heated up. If it's in the plastic that's in your item, don't fool yourself, it's going in your body. And INDEPENDANT studies (that is studies that weren't funded by the plastics industry) state that BPA is cancer harmful even in LOW DOSES.
14great post
15I purchased two of the 12 oz. with sports lid for my son for his lunch box. Right away, I noticed that his lunchbox, back pack, folders, etc. were getting soaked and I was blaming him for not securing the lid. Then, one day, I filled it and put it in his lunch box and in his backpack and watched as it leaked out of his back pack and soaked his coat and pants on the way to the bus stop.
16I contacted Kleen Kanteen to get a refund. They said that the website states in many places that the sports lid is NOT leak-proof and would only provide me with a different lid. In reviewing the website again, I only found it stated that it was high-flow under the "caps" section, with no mention of it under the 12 oz. bottle section. I explained how my son is in kindergarten and has fine motor delays and can not open a twist cap by himself. However, only a different lid was offered. I did not find customer service to be helpful and I think the website is misleading in it's information. I also have several friends who have the same problem. For the amount of money they charge, it should certainly not leak like a sieve. VERY DISAPPOINTING!
