Doritos, Fritos, Oreos, gummy bears, Lays potato chips, Snickers, M&Ms, Butterfingers, Reeses Peanut Butter Cups, Hershey Bars, Lifesavers, Twizzlers! I know this sounds like a PMS wish list, but this is the "food" in the snack vending machine where I work. You call that crap a snack?!
I'm usually one to bring my lunch and snacks from home, and this is a major reason why - It's hard to find healthy food in a pinch. It's really becoming annoying! I mean, what kind of message is this sending to kids (and adults) when everywhere they turn is sugar, partially hydrogenated oil and trans fat!
I wish we could replace all those crappy snacks with healthy, energy-giving munchies that are made of actual food. Here's what I'd put in my healthy vending machine:
- granola bars like ones made by Kashi and
- Whole grain crackers like TLC crackers
- Tiny tubs of real peanut butter (just peanuts - no sugar or corn syrup)
- LARABARS
- Packages of mixed nuts
- Packages of dried fruit
- Bear Naked Trail Mix
- Nature's choice cereal bars
- Newman's Own Organic pretzels
- Gardin of Eatin' Tortilla chips (I love Pico de Gallo)
- Endangered Species Chocolate bars
Fit's Tips: Until YoNaturals, the San Diego based company with the healthy vending machine idea gets its machines into the world, be your own vending machine. I always keep granola bars and ziploc baggies of trail mix in my purse and gym bag just in case.

agreed!!
1i ALWAYS carry an array of snacks because i'm always at work or school or out, and will NOT succumb to snarfing down hostess cupcakes. the only thing i get out of a vending machine is coffee, and even then i'm a bit scared to know the nutritionals.
I usually get animal crackers or pretzels when faced with the snack machine. I think a little tub of peanut butter is a great idea! I could add a little protein to my snack and stay full longer!
2luckily for me, the vending machines i'm surrounded by every day have nature's choice bars in them, so if i'm really hungry i'll grab one of those. usually i try to stay away from the machines though.
3Vending machine helped me pack on about ten pounds this semester...never again.
4All of our locals schools have refrigerated vending machine, yogurt, soy yogurt, gogurt, drinkables, string cheese, trail mix and a few types of granola bars, it's greeat except a majority of people are lactose intolerant.
5I usually have a small bag of trail mix in my purse whenever I go out - especially if I'm going shopping! Can't shop on an empty stomach!
6my boss laughs at me because i have a bag of animal crackers in the desk and the peanut butter and applesauce in the fridge. it helps me eat a bit healthier while he is down getting the cupcakes and donuts out of the vending machine..... ive lost 10 pounds since beginning of april so it must be helping
7I feel blessed for living in Europe. while vending machines still have a lot of junk, they usually have some fruit, lean meat sandwiches, granola bars, water, etc. as well.
