Expand Your Workout, Close Your Eyes

One thing I have been doing recently during a few of my static exercises, that has been helping to keep my focus, is closing my eyes. I know it sounds odd (and potentially a bit dangerous) but sometimes the distractions at the gym (or in the park) are too much for me to stay focused.

With my eyes closed I can really concentrate on my form and breathing. Plus, it takes me away from the chaos of the gym, if even for only a few seconds. Try it with simple isometric movements first, such as while you're doing planks. I also like to close my eyes while I am stretching at the end of my workout. Some folks like to do it with more dynamic exercises because closing your eyes forces your brain and muscles to work harder to communicate with each other, but this is not for beginners as you could get hurt or hurt someone else (i.e., jumping jacks with your eyes closed in a crowded gym).

Fit's Tip: If you are going to practice this technique, you may want to enlist a partner so you've got someone watching your back (literally) when you're not able to.
