I have become a cake snob. If I'm at an event — wedding, baby shower, kid's birthday party — and the cake doesn't rock my world, I don't eat it. This rule works for all party fare in general. Do not feel obligated to eat high-calorie food that doesn't taste exquisite. Hold the plate of cake and toss it as soon as is politely convenient. This way when an absolutely divine piece of cake comes your way, you can enjoy it knowing that it is a treat worth waiting for.
