While foods made with white flour like bagels, regular pasta, and sliced bread are a no-no, don't steer clear of all carbs. Complex carbs may be high in calories (one cup of cooked quinoa is 254 calories) but like fruits, whole grains and foods made from them are full of hearty, belly-filling fiber — you don't have to eat much to feel full. During these chillier months, enjoy nutritious foods like whole wheat pasta, whole grain bread, brown rice, and barley, just be sure to measure out appropriate servings.
If you're trying to lose pounds before seeing the family for the holidays, ditching carbs may work at first, but you can't sustain a carb-free diet forever. Chances are high that once you reach your goal weight and introduce bread and spaghetti back into your meals, you'll end up gaining the weight back. It's best to learn to eat appropriate portion sizes of complex carbs so you'll not only lose weight, but you won't miss out on your favorite warm and satisfying foods.
