Do You Lie to Your Doctor?

When I go to the doctor for a check-up, especially when I see my gynecologist for my annual, I always get inundated with personal questions about my health.

How often do you exercise?

Are you in a monogomous relationship?

Do you have protected sex?

Have you ever had sex with someone who was HIV positive?

Do you have pain during sex?

Have you ever had sex with a man who had sex with a man?

How often do you drink alcohol?

Do you smoke cigarettes?

Do you smoke pot?

Do you use any other illegal drugs?

Some of the questions I have no problem answering, but some of them are not for sharing.

If we are not being judged then why am I all of a sudden being told that I am depressed (by my PA so I have seen her maybe twice in all my life) and I need anti anxiety pills. My when I went to the doctor for a lagit reason my kids were taken out of the room and I was being told that sometimes, "Women have bad thoughts that something is going to happen sometimes to prepare us for when something bad does happen." She told me this and that she read it somewhere that all women do this. Well if that is true, why are you calling me crazy? This woman has only had 1 kid and has no idea what stress of children means. So I am still dizzy and I am hoping to find out why. I am thinking I need to go to a new doctor and pretend I never had kids or anything just to see what they find. They do come to conclusions sometimes that are unfounded.

If it doesn't pertain to my health, I'm not answering. I just leave the form blank and figure that if my doc needs to ask, she will.

I find no reason in lying. Yes, I agree that telling the truth is only going to benefit you and your health... But I also think that sometimes doctors and nurses can tell if you're lying. ;) It's all confidential anyway.

I've had rude doctors and I've had caring ones. being honest with your doctor can mean the difference between life and death. I still NEVER lie to my doc, especially my Gyno. Knowing your personal sexual history is vital to him/her maintaining your health. -the ceeg

I havent have anything to hide but my BFF just told me about such case when she was too embarassed to admit that she had had another lover.

The last time I went to the Gyno, she asked if I wanted to get checked for STDS. I said there was no need since I had been with the same person for 2 years.GET THIS!!! - She had the nerve to say, "Well, that's how most women find out their men are cheating on them."Isn't that just awful?!!I switched doctors after that.

I don't think it's good to lie to your doctor. They ask those questions for a reason - not just to be intrusive. Your doctor can't treat properly if he/she is working off false or omitted information.

I think any lies we tell about ourselves to a Dr., or friend, whomever, really tells you something about the person you want to be. Like if you only exercise 1x a week and you say you exercise 4x a week, that says a lot, etc. I know I'm looking way too into this!

I lie about my personal life. The Man tells me not to for all the reasons you stated, but I still do sometimes. When I was prego, at my 12 week, I figured I better be as honest as possible and tell the nurse EVERYTHING - including that The Man and I were both heavy pot smokers before I knew. My last gyno appt (two years later) the nurse was like, "This chart says that you and your husband ARE heavy drug users, is that still true?" "OMG, NO!!" I was SOOOOO embarassed. So...being that they RECORD it all, I just keep stuff like that to myself from now on - even stuff about my sex life. What if, like, I get famous and, like, some bitter nurse decides to leak my info and, like, it ruined my image, you know? hahahah.

Before I quit smoking, I would always lie about how many cigarettes I smoked in an average day when the doctor asked. Stupid, I know. Now that I quit, I guess I don't have to worry about it!

Doctors are not there to judge, they are there to help you be as healthy as you can be and these questions all are important in determining your overall health and risks. Lying to doctors just seems silly to me. My father in law has to deal with a lot of people sick people at his practice, and who do not tell the truth. It would make his job and their lives much easier if they were just honest.

I have never had a doctor I really trust so some of the question that i don't' think really pertain to my health, i don't really share. if i am embarrassed to answer the question it does make me think about why. and that is a great exercise for me.
