Did you make a new year's resolution to workout more? Well, if you are the type of exerciser who likes to be part of something larger (working out in a group), have some outside structure (like a coach and practice schedule) and specific end goals (competing in races) - you should definitely check out the US Masters Swimming program.
Founded in 1970, USMS is "dedicated to the premise that the lives of participants will be enhanced through aquatic physical conditioning." Their mission is to promote fitness and health in adults by offering and supporting swimming programs. There are Masters Swimming programs at over 450 participating pools across the nation and their website has a great map and location tool for finding them. Chances are high there is one near you.

Joining USMS has many benefits, but my favorite is the coached workouts because swimming laps on your own can get boring. having a coach will help improve your strokes and push you a little harder than you would push yourself. Plus you will be part of a team, so get a little social element to your workout as well as motivation. You also get to race if you want too.
USMS welcomes swimmers of all abilities who want to improve their overall fitness and develop better technique.
The annual fee is only $35 and once you're a member you also receive discounts from USMS National sponsors to help you get outfitted with gear you will need for your new swim schedule.
