I read a comment by the PR person for the NY marathon (if I recall correctly) saying that celebrities add interest to any sporting event, and a marathon is no different. He also pointed out that few celebrities pay for court-side tickets or even have a hard time getting into restaurants. As much as I respect the frustration of those who do qualify but still did not make the draw, I think the celebrity angle is valid. Any sport has to keep the level of spectator interest high. Also, there are several legit ways to get into the NY Marathon, including joining the NY Road Runners and running five races a year with them, or applying at least four times -- you are guaranteed a spot the fourth time.

yeah i realized that she didnt run but months and months ago, the Boston Officials told her that she could run it if she wanted to, because they waive the qualification time for celebrities. also, as someone who finds running a 5k hard, i think anyone who does a marathon at all is a pretty gungho runner. not only because of the endurance and physical aspect, but the training takes a ton of self discipline. congrats!!

Katie ran NYC, not Boston. There is no qualifying time at New York, only Boston. So she did not get any type of waiver as far as time goes. Although NYC is hard to get in just because of its popularity. Of course she would have no trouble, being Mrs. Tom Cruise. And NY was Katie's first marathon.

Me too, TidalWave ... if Ali ran Boston in 5:00+, I'm going to go out on a limb and say she's never ran a sub 4 hr marathon. How old was she when she ran Boston?

Katie Holmes ran a pretty slow time, especially considering how young she is. She must have not trained much.

Katie Holmes ran the NYC Marathon with a time of 5:29:58. To run in the Boston Marathon, you need a qualifying time of 3:40:59, as a female. So it's absolutely retarded that the Boston Marathon is letting her run! My friend ran a 3:45:33 and, obviously, didn't qualify. But here comes Katie Holmes with her five hour time and they let her run! She's going to be the last one on the course! What a joke!
