Oscar Pistorius's and Kirani James's Race-Bib Exchange

In London, Oscar Pistorius of South Africa became the first double-leg amputee to compete in an Olympic track and field event. The 25-year-old ran well in his first heat but was not fast enough to make it out of the semifinal rounds. Kirani James, 19, of Grenada won the heat and went on to win gold — Grenada's first Olympic gold ever.

These two men both set precedents at the 2012 Games, and James recognized a kindred competitive spirit in Pistorius. After their race, he asked Oscar to exchange bibs, a sign of respect in track and field. The bib may be a small, thin piece of paper, but the gesture was huge.
