A couple of years ago, I bought a new digital alarm clock. The numbers are displayed with blue light instead of red. I thought blue light would be more soothing and possibly help me drift off more easily to the land of nod. Boy, was I wrong.
Blue light actually interferes with the production of melatonin, a hormone that induces sleep. TVs and computer screens also emit blue light, which is why you should turn off the electronic gadgets an hour before bedtime, so your body can start producing melatonin. In fact, blue light is so powerful at interfering with our ability to sleep that some truckers use blue lights to keep them awake on long nights on the road. The blue light helps truckers reset their circadian rhythm and tricks them into thinking morning is fast approaching.
I am replacing the blue clock because sometimes I need all the help I can get when it comes to falling asleep.

What about green, my clock has green digits.
1my night light is blue. hm, makes me think. anyway, i'm healthy and have no problem falling asleep, i have some problems staying that way
so i'll keep my light.
2How about red?
Haha, I used to have blue curtains and a blue carpet in my bedroom, so the whole room would be pretty blue in any light. Always had trouble sleeping. I still do, though, but perhaps not as bad.
3our duvet and and curtains are blue! but dark blue...my alarm light is red.
4That's interesting, because I've always found the blue lights put me in a bad mood right away!
5Yes! There's a blue light on my laptop that remains on even when the laptop is off and it's amazing how annoying it is! I always have to cover it up.
6interesting, we got a new router that has an always on really BRIGHT blue light.
i wonder if that is the same for reptiles. a lot of the "night lights" they sell are blue and they say it's to mimic moonlight. i usually use the red ones but i think now i will be sure to skip the blue ones just so my little guys dont have issues.
7red sharpie - I know the feeling!! Our speakers for the tv have a very annoying blue (or maybe green) light and I have to make sure they are off/covered up before I can even attempt to go to sleep.
Our alarm clock is red lettering and it is on my side of the bed. I make sure the clock is turned around/facing the other way. It is rather annoying too.
8The front of my cable box has bright blue lights on it. For the longest time I was just covering it, but that made it hard to change channels. I had to call the company to see how to turn them off. It lit up my whole room!
9i think that for myself ANY light keeps me awake. the worst is that there are so many lights that shine into my bedroom of my apt that it's never ending!
10Mine are yellow and quite bright, I can see the nearby shelf. I have to turn it or face the other way, otherwise it'll be too bright.
11I had no idea! How fascinating.
12Interesting info. Mine is blue. I wonder if yellow saran wrap taped over the readout would help.
13this is why people who work graveyard shifts have a ahrder time w/their immune system...that circadian can be a biznatch. i also wanted to add- taking melatonin pills can give you some WHACKED OUT dreams!
14A lot of the newer alarm clocks (especially those that accommodate iPods) have dimmer switches on them. With mine, I can turn the light off completely before I go to bed, and a simple tap of the snooze bar brings the light up without changing the alarm settings at all.
