Summer travel season is here. And with so many of us on the go, it can be hard to sneak in a workout, especially with bulky workout gear that's hard to pack. So today I'm showing you my five fitness travel must-haves. I reviewed each of my picks on the following characteristics. Light weight, easy to pack, easy to carry around. First up is the lightweight travel yoga mat from Manduka. Yoga is a great way to stretch after a long flight, and you can do it anywhere, which makes it a great vacation exercise. And this super portable mat makes it really easy to sneak in some moves at the beach, in the park or even in your hotel room. It only weighs about two pounds, and unlike other mats that you have to roll up and carry on their own this one actually folds down so its really easy to pack, and you can throw it in your purse for your carry-on. And the portability does not sacrifice grip. I find that it really doesn't slip, even on carpeting. Next up is this lightweight running shoe from New Balance. One of my favorite way to discover a new city is to for a run or a walk. It's a great way to get in a workout and see the sites. But packing of the pair of running shoes can be tedious. Most pairs are quite heavy, especially when you're traveling with just a carry-on. Well, this pair from New Balance actually weighs just eight ounces. It's one of the lightest pairs out there. So there's no more excuses to leave your running shoes at home. It may be lightweight, but it's heavy on performance. It stacks up to the competition in speed, durability, and comfort. There's great cushioning in the heel, too. And I love the fun colors. These cross-trainers are also great for classic gym workout, too. Of course, you need some music for your runs, too. The iPod nano provides a nice soundtrack, but it also counts every step you take in its pedometer feature, so you can measure your distance, pace, and time while exercising. This is a great way to motivate you to keep moving even though you're not your normal routine. This latest iPod Nano is smaller and lighter than ever, so it barely takes up any room in your bag. You also don't have to carry it around with you. This clip here attaches to your sleeve, jacket, or running shorts. And its touch screen makes it easy to switch songs while you run. You can also shake it to shuffle songs. How great is that? And the battery is long lasting, too. It gives you 24 hours of non-stop music, which is great when you're away from home and not always near your charger. I love to bring a jump rope with me when I travel. Jumping rope is a great cardio workout. You can do it in small spaces like your hotel room, and it can actually burn more calories than running in the same amount of time. It's a great vacation workout, especially if you don't feel like venturing out for a run on your own. Plus, a jump rope easily fits into the smallest of travel bags. So this one from Harbinger only weighs less than a pound. The cord has a smooth and consistent swinging motion and it's retractable. It actually doesn't shorten that much, so it doesn't make huge difference in portability. Another small workout accessory is a resistance cord. This one from Gaiam comes with a full length DVD, so you can get a total body workout anywhere. Now, resistance cords are great for sculpting your arms, legs, and abs. They give you the same benefits as working out with weights, so they're a great choice for traveling because they're super lightweight and easy to pack.
