In this edition of Get It Up, I don't want to focus on duration, but rather distance. Next time you hop on the treadmill or elliptical, forget about the timer and focus on the miles. Aim to do three miles — just shy of a 5K — of whatever it is you are doing. Depending on your fitness level and machine, this could vary time wise. As a guideline, if you are jogging 6 miles per hour, that's a ten minute mile and three miles should take you about 30 minutes without a warm up and cool down. Just remember that even though you're not paying attention to time does not mean you shouldn't push yourself to really do your best.
If you try it out, I'd love to hear how long it took you to do your three miles and which machine you did it on. Enjoy!

I'll have to try this. I usually watch the calories burned when I do it.
1I'm training for a 5K (Couch potato to 5K YEA) and I did my first try at it the other day. Walking and running I did it in 39 min. Running 20 min (broken down to 10 min runs) and the rest was walking. My shins Ache though. But I'm glad I have a starting point. Now I can just work on shaving time off! Race is in May!
2good luck renees3!
at first my shins ached (quite bad) too
but now, i'm doing my 4 up to 7.5 miles dose per day
yay to running! it's the best!
if i eat quite a lot in a day i can go 7.5 miles in 40mins
3Way to go renees3. I just wanted to add that you should make sure you have the proper running shoes and that they aren't too worn. For me, shin pain is usually a sign that my shoes are starting to wear out. Good luck!
4I can't do three miles. Ever.
5Good luck, Renee! I did my first 5K last year and was so happy when I completed the whole thing without stopping or walking - it's such a good distance to start out on, I think! And it totally motivates you to want to do longer distances, etc.!
6My boyfriend and I decided this week we're going to start training to run a 5K, I'm doing the Couch to 5K running plan as well! We'll see how it goes!
7I want to do a 5K! Can anyone recommend a website or a place to start looking for races in the NYC area?
8Good luck to all of you who are training for their first 5k! I ran my first 5k last weekend and finished in 36 minutes. I'm planning on doing another one in a couple of months and can't wait because it was tons of fun even though it was SO COLD out.
Regarding this post and doing 3 miles on a machine: I don't know what's up with my elliptical, but after 30 minutes it says I've only done 1 mile, and I know that doesn't correspond with my real running time because I can do almost three miles in that time period. Because of this, I don't put much faith in the other counts either, like calories burned, so I just watch the time elapsed. I guess I should get it calibrated or something, but it's not been a big concern.
9Boosha, check out www.active.com, and good luck!
10It takes me about 40 minutes of running & walking to reach 3 miles. I know I need to step it up and will keep working at it.
11It takes me 25 minutes to do 2.5 miles on my treadmill. tonight I'll push to 3. I just started running again last week so. I think this is a pretty good start. I forgot how much I love to run, so I'm excited.
12boosha, I don't know how soon you want to do one, but there's one in APril

It's in albany though.
As for shoes, I just bought new ones a month ago, when I first started working out.
This website has training schedules for all different races from 5K to marathon.

Good luck everyone! Maybe we should make a couch potato 5K group
if anyone is interested I started a new group

couch potato to 5k!
Any running stuff welcome!
I did my 3 miles on the treadmill, and it took 27 minutes, and all my willpower to make it that far. I usually only run for 25 minutes, and those last two were killer!
15I am training for an 8K at the end of March. I did a run by Lake Michigan (Chicago) on Tuesday before all the snow/cold came back. It was awesome.
I suggest making yourself a playlist with a warmup song, 30 mins of running songs, and a cooldown song. Lets you run for 30 mins without watching the time click by. Its good to just have to make it to the end of the song rather than 20 more mins. ya know?
16If the model in the picture is coming along, I'm there.
17@ almostloli: you run 7.5 miles in 40 minutes?!? Are you a professional runner? Cause that's a 5:19 minute mile & the world record for a 10K is run a little faster than a 5 minute mile and that's only 6.2 miles. You must kick ass in local races. I'm very jealous.
It takes me about 25 minutes to run 3 miles. I always focus on mileage when I run. I'll do workouts by minutes when I'm on the elliptical or bike, but I always choose my distance on the treadmill or plan a route outside and run until I'm done.
18And the women's world record for the 12K (7.46 miles) is 38:22!!
19My first 5K time was 29:22; 10K time was 1:04:24 (with Bronchitis) and I am training for my first half-marathon. If I'm pushing it I can do 3 miles in about 27-28 minutes. But then it's usually all I do =) I just counted today, and I ran 55 miles in January! Yay! I didn't realize it until I started counting... And it is quite a cool feeling to see a number like that. I suggest writing down each down how far you run, or how long, or some way to track numbers. Seeing them at the end of the week, or month, really can be a great motivator! I know Fit knows what I'm talking about!
20I'm doing the Couch to 5k, too. Actually, I guess I've completed it, but now I'm working on increasing my speed. For me, just running for 30 minutes was hard to start with.
I need to stop reading FitSugar right now and go put on my work out clothes so I can do my 3 miles.
21I'm training for the Country Music Marathon in April and have been since November. I have never been a runner and it has been a huge adjustment for me. I did 3 miles last night in barely under 40 minutes so I know I have a ways to go!
22Congrats to everyone who's training for a 5K! It's a great beginner race and almost anyone can do one. I did 5K outside in 19:58. I normally don't run that fast, but when I'm only going 5K, I go all out.
23I did 3 miles in 42 minutes on the treadmill. Not the best time, but pretty good since I really wanted to skip my workout tonight altogether.
24I did my 3 miles in 33 minutes and 30 seconds. It was the first time I'd ever run 3 miles. 3 months ago I couldn't run a quarter of a mile!!!
25I can do 3 miles in an hour if I break it up with strength training moves every five minutes or so. I can't run for more than 15 minutes at a time right now. I have goals, and I'll get there soon, hopefully.
26I am an elliptical FIEND, but have really started to plateau so I just started jogging. I jog around my track at the gym. So far, and this is so embarrassing, I can only do 1/5 of a mile without stopping (of jogging, not walking, lol). But then I walk a lap or two and go again. I figure if I keep this up, I'll be a running machine in no time!
