As a kid, hot dogs are a staple up there with mac and cheese and pizza. We learned to love them, but now we know they're really not that good for us. Many contain saturated fat and those dreadful nitrites, which are found to be carcinogenic.

If you or your kids can't bear to give up hot dogs, then check out a healthier alternative called Tofu Pups. Want to see what they look like and how they compare to regular hot dogs? Then read more

These pups have that smoky smell and flavor you love about hot dogs, but they definitely have a different consistency. Since these are made with extra firm tofu, they're kind of springy like hot dogs, but they're not juicy and they don't have that thin skin that hot dogs have. Since they taste pretty similar, I think they're definitely worth trying, especially since they're much healthier as compared to beef franks.
I knew they'd have less cholesterol and saturated fat, but I had no idea that a hot dog made from tofu would have more protein. Now I love these even more.
Fit's Tips: I would not try grilling these pups because they'll just stick to your grill. Boil them in some water or microwave them for best results.

can't do it. I have an issue with the consistency.
1Same here. I've tried them before, I just can't get past the weird way they feel in your mouth.
My compromise has been Jennie-O's Turkey Dogs. Still not the best thing in the world, but much better for you than regular hot dogs.
2Eh.. I'm not a huge fan of the tofu pups. Light Life's Smart Dog or Yves The Good Dog are my favorite vegan hot dogs.
3Try the Morningstar Farm hot dogs!! those are so yummy, and one only has like, 70 calories and a half gram of fat or something crazy low like that.
4One might as well just enjoy the nitrite filled hotdog. The more I read about soy products, the more I learn it is a misnomer regarding all their health benefits. Think phytates...enzyme inhibitors...hemagglutinin.
5Ha, love the name!
6i really don't like these...we get the morningstar farms veggie dogs, and they're MUCH better.

8The texture's fine for me but I don't like the taste. Once I loaded mine with condiments it was okay, but I'll be trying a different veggie brand next time.
9There's actually a lot of brands with nitrite-free hot dogs out there now. My father had to give up hot dogs (one of his favorite things) a long time ago because the nitrites give him horrible migraines- but about five years ago we started finding nitrite-free hot dogs on the market! Needless to say, he's thrilled that he can eat a hot dog and not suffer for it.
10Ill try 'em! If they taste the same you could have two for less calories than one regular
11Yeah, I can't really compromise on texture.
12I'm not sure if it's the same brand that I eat, but I actually like the tofu dogs a little bit better, and the texture of tofu usually really skeeves me out.
13I tried these once and hated them. I thought that there was waaaaay too much smokey flavor and it just tasted fake. plus the consistency wasn't the best, but I don't usually mind that if it doesn't taste TOO fake. I'm weird in general about non-meat meat products. I'd rather just eat veggies or plain tofu.
14I don't eat processed foods.
15i'm totally on the morningstar bandwagon, these are just not the right texture for me. the little hot dog boy is cute tho!
16I want to try it.
17i grill em! mmmmm
18I tried these when I first started losing weight because I was craving a hot dog, but I really hated these. They were bland and the texture was really gross.
19CCSugar & Kelliegonzo, ditto on the Morningstar! Upon fist becoming a vegetarian, I would eat Smartdogs religiously, b/c they had less calories (45) than their counterparts... Then one day, for whatever reason, I bought Morningstar instead. After my first bite, I spit it out in fear that I was eating a real (ahem, meat) hotdog. Now granted it's been a good 8 years since I've tasted a real hotdog (Prior to becoming a vegetarian, I avoided all pig products for many years), so the avid meat-eaters may find some fault with the product, but it remains a staple of my diet.
20P.S. with the Smartdogs and the other soydogs I've experimented with, ketchup was mandatory in order for me to enjoy consumption. Not the case with Morningstar, though ketchup never hurts

21Applegate Farms makes nitrite free dogs.
22Tofu Pups have been my favorite for years. My grandchildren love them. I can't find them in my area any more. Help. I love them cold right out of the package or with onions, ketchup, mustard and a little mayo. I also chop fine and mix with dill pickle relish, mayo and minced onion for the tastiest sandwich spread. My whole church loved those.
