Since it's that time of year when illness spreads like jam on toast, I'm sure you or someone you know has suffered from a stomach bug. Or was it food poisoning? It's good to know which it is, so you know whether or not you are contagious or if other people shouldn't eat the mystery meat you ate in the fridge.
So how can you tell? To find out read more.
| Stomach Bug (Stomach Flu) | Food Poisoning | |
| Cause | Passed by a virus that attacks the intestines. You catch it by coming in contact with someone who is infected, or by touching something he or she has touched. This virus can also be passed on through contaminated food or water. | You get it by eating contaminated food that contains infectious organisms, bacteria (like E. coli), viruses, or parasites. |

| How it's diagnosed | A doctor will ask about your symptoms or take a stool sample. If they see bacteria, they know it's not a bug. | A doctor will ask you questions about food you've eaten, how long you've felt symptoms, and will perform tests such as checking your blood and stool. They may also check for parasites. |

|
| Prevention | Avoid coming in contact with an infected person or anything he or she has touched. Wash your hands several times a day, especially before you eat and after you use machines at the gym. Don't share personal items like cups, utensils, or towels. | Keep your hands, cooking surfaces, and utensils clean. Keep hot food hot and cold food cold. Throw out food that has been sitting out or foods you're not sure about. Cook foods safely and thoroughly. For more tips, check out this post on preventing food poisoning. |

Wow - this TOTALLY reminds of a recent experience. My boyfriend took me to a spa/hotel/resort in the Cotswolds, England, and after eating breakfast at the hotel (we had seperate things), got really REALLY violently ill a few hours later. I was so worried about him that I talked to the hotel manager about the possibility of getting an emergency doctor in to see him because never in my LIFE have I ever witnessed someone that violently ill! The manager tried to convince me that it was a stomach bug, but my bf and I were both pretty certain that it was food poisoning, since we didn't eat anything after breakfast and the restaurant staff were REALLY rushing to get food out that day due to guests all arriving at the same time. Beans were undercooked, etc. and he had eaten a sunny-side up egg and some sausages - either could have been the culprit. In the end, he was sick for maybe 11 hours or so, but had no further symptoms and didn't end up going to a doctor. But we had a really hard time deciding whether it was a stomach bug or food poisoning! I didn't get anything, thank goodness (b/c I had to be on a ten hour flight a few days later), but I was so worried I would catch it!
1Food poisoning is hell.
2i got food poisining last summer and the stomach flu in december
they both suck
3Wow I've never had FP and thank God!
4these symptoms are unbelievably similar... how was this supposed to help?
5Several sources I've seen say that a lot of people think they have the stomach flu, when they really have food poisoning. It's a lot more common than people think .
6Here's the rule: there is no such thing as "24 hour flu". If you have a bout of diarrhea or vomiting that lasts about a day and your symptoms are pretty limited to your GI tract, it's probably food poisoning. Don't forget that E. coli isn't the only food poisoning out there. Lots of bacteria can throw your system off...campylobacter, Listeria, etc. And once your body clears out the bacteria, you feel a lot better. If your vomiting/diarrhea lasts more than a day, it's probably stomach flu or a viral infection.
7That sucks bigestive. My boyf and I experienced something similar...It had started to snow, and we were in Virginia Beach, waiting for a dinner reservation...we canceled and headed back because the roads were getting bad, but we stopped in Hampton at an Olive Garden. I got stuffed chicken...BIG MISTAKE. They were also apprently in a hurry to beat the snow...I woke up at 5AM the next morning with what i thought was indigestion becauseI could taste my dinner. Well, i had abdominal cramps so bad i could lie down, i could only sit in one position. Eventually i got diahrrea and started vomitting. I went to doctor becauseI couldn't hold down any type of fluid at all, and she gave me anti-nausea pills. They helped, but I still vomitted some. It lasted 2 days. I am pretty sure I had salmanella poisoning. I had a fever, and was miserable. I can't even look at an Olive Garden now without remembering that. I certainly can't eat at one.
8Thank you Spectra! I hate it when people don't believe you when you speculate you've or someone you know has had food poisoning. They're ALWAYS quick to say "Nah, it's just a stomach bug." Like, the hotel manager we spoke to, he kept saying that it was a stomach bug and that he had checked "all the temperatures" in the kitchen. But it's not necc. the temperatures of the ovens/hobs that are of concern, but the amount of TIME the food has spent cooking, long enough to kill off the bacteria. I am certain my boyfriend had food poisoning and the reason why I informed the hotel staff was not only out of concern for my bf, but for THEIR benefit too - I was curious to know how many OTHER people had come down with similar symptoms! Cravin - I'm so sorry that happened to you, it must have been terrible. I know what you mean about not being able to eat at an Olive Garden now - every time I think of that spa, I remember how it totally ruined my birthday weekend!!! This is kind of off topic, but the funniest thing was that that spa/hotel was featured in a magazine contest a few weeks later and I couldn't help laughing ... man, I would never go there again!!!
9Cravin - the chicken was probably not cooked correctly - that is probably one of the worst kinds of food poisoning you can get! Poor you, hon!!!
10last sunday morning I was in a car wreck and that evening i came down with a stomach bug. Cramps, loose stools, fever, and a bad headache. It is miserable. So far i am on day 4 of this and i seem to be getting better. I called my dr nad he said to eat yougart and bananas. This will help harden stools and still pass the virus out. If you can stay away from taking anything that will stop it I.E. imodium, pepto, ect. as for it will cause the virus to stay in you longer. If the cramps are that bad and for adults only go ahead and take it it does help. Just be forwarned the more you take the longer it will last. i hope this is helpful.
11My 8 year old friend started complaining about a pain in the stomach, which got worse throughout the day. This happened on a thursday, and was thought to be an abdomen inflamation. Its now sunday and the doctors at Mayday have said that it isnt an inflamation, but a dangerous bug. The severe symptoms were excessive vomiting an diahorrea, and sever pains in the stomach. The doctors cant figure out which bug it is. Can you help pls?
12On Saturday evening I felt extremely ill for roughly an hour before heading to the toilet twice to sort myself out. I then arrived home to find that my daughter had been sick for most of the evening and continued through the night! But she seemed quite happy or though tired yesterday. She had a bout of watery diarrhea for most of the morning but ate extremely well but was a little sick during the night but nowhere near as bad as Saturday night. She woke up this morning fine and happy again. I on the other hand since eating at lunch time have felt considerably sick! It feels very flu like but I've had similar before and it turned out to be food poisoning then but after being sick earlier today I don't really feel much better and neither me or my daughter have eaten the same thing!
13This article helped me understand the diff between the two, and actually. I thought I had the stomache bug, I believe I may have gotton FP from my cousins cooking tho, (her first time cooking for our family) I don't think shell be staying with us anymore lol
