We've all heard that yo-yo dieting is bad for your health, but did you know that yo-yo exercising could be just as bad?
A study from the Journal of Applied Physiology has found that periods of strenuous exercise followed by weeks of physical inactivity can lead to increased fat cell production. Since increased fat cell production — fat cell hyperplasia — can lead to weight gain and obesity, this is not something any of us want, nor is it healthy. This is why moderation and making a plan to fit exercise (and healthy eating) into your lifestyle is recommended rather than starting something drastic that you know you will not be able to follow for years to come.

no way !!
1Does this mean that if I pause for a month or two (for example in winter) and I start jogging again after that, this will no benefit my health but harm it !??? It can't be...
that happened to me a few times, but i still used to think that excersising at least once in 2 weeks is better than not excersising at all. Now I'll know better
2Wow this seems a bit crazy. I have to agree with Spirit22 with her question.
3i dont find this kind of information to be helpful in any way.
4it only makes already self-conscious, fitness-obsessed girls (like myself) even more obsessed. now going to the gym isnt good enough; we have to never take a break? what happens when you get sick? its certainly not healthy to work out when you're sick. can i take an f-ing vacation and just relax without having to worry that fat cells are growing? its just really ridiculous and unrealistic to think that we should be working out consistently and never need to take a break. let the fat cells pile on!
I have to agree with sperle. This post seems somewhat inappropriate for a portion of this website that is trying to motivate women to be healthy and stick to their goals. It's also a misleading post as the actual study is only done in a rat model, not tested on human cells and its only over the course of 45 days. You can't extrapolate that (and the study authors don't)to say that we can not take a break from exercising!
5I'm not the most consistent exerciser, so this worries me. I've never actually seen any negative effects when I've fallen into a slump though. WHat about after your break, once you start exercising again? Can't that kickstart your metabolism again or something?
6I have a habit of getting in phases where I work out all the time and then I get in a slump and barely do anything much at all for months. Once I start working out again, though, I spring back to the shape I was in almost immediately. I guess that has a lot to do with fast metabolism and good muscle tone, though... I'm glad I'm back to working out more.
I can't see how a long break without exercise followed by working out again can be harmful--I mean, at least you're moving again!
7This is good motivation to keep a REALISTIC and CONSISTENT daily exercise plan.
